Coordinator of Youth Ministry Job Description
St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church
Purpose: Lead and coordinate the Youth Ministry program at St. Andrew’s UMC which inspires
youth to seek the triune God, live a faithful lifestyle as disciples of Jesus Christ, value life
in the church community and discover ways to express their love for God through service
to others.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1)Vision
a)Cast a vision for youth ministry in the 21st century that inspires youth and their families to
grow in their discipleship, desire to be committed to their faith and the church, and love
their neighbor.
b)Build relationships with youth, families and church members to understand needs, culture to
guide the vision of the youth ministry program in harmony with the vision of St. Andrew’s
and The UMC
c)Support and promote the vision, mission and goals of St. Andrew’s U.M.C.
d)Support and promote the mission and vision of The United Methodist Church
e)Create and reinforce a welcoming and inclusive culture of Christian community based on
grace, trust, love and mutual support
2)Direct Youth Ministry
a)Coordinate the Youth Ministry programsof St. Andrew’s U.M.C., includingbut not limited
to ministries to youth from grades 6 to 12, monitoring attendance and engagement trends
b)Keep up on social trends youth are dealing with and facing on a regular basis and engage
them in dialogue around trends
c)Work closely with adult leaders to provide interesting and engaging programs, activities,
experiences and ministries for St. Andrew’s youth that give them the opportunity to grow
spiritually, to give service to others, to enjoy Christian fellowship and to strengthen their
relationship with Christ
d)Coordinate with the pastoral staff to offer and/or teach Confirmation reflecting United
Methodist history, values and Discipline as needed and maintain communication with Parents
and Mentors throughout the process
e)Develop youth from learner to ministry leader through programming, training, mentoring
and educational opportunities
f)Continually evaluate the effectiveness of the Youth Ministry and improve the strategy and
program offered
3)Recruiting and Training
a)In accordance with the congregation’s Safe Sanctuaries policy, recruit, train and sustain adult
ministry servants to oversee and lead all areas of Youth Ministry byproviding educational
and growth opportunities through conferences, trainings, speakers and resource materials
b)In accordance with the congregation’s Safe Sanctuaries policy, work with the Coordinator of
Children’s ministry to recruit ministry servants to teach youth Sunday school
c)Supervise student interns placed with the Youth Ministry program
d)Teach and train adults, parents and youth about online safety
e)Collaborate with the Associate Pastor of Discipleship to equip parents to encourage their
youth to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ
4)Curriculum and Budget
a)Research curriculum and make decisions based on the knowledge of the youth and their
needs spiritually
b)Create a discipleship pathway for the youth ministry in conjunction with Education team,
Associate Pastor of Discipleship and Coordinator of Children’s Ministry
c)Oversee the budget of the Youth Ministry area, including special Youth Ministry funds
5)Communication
a)Maintain proactive, regular communication with adult leaders, youth, parents and the
congregation aboutYouth Ministry programs/activities, utilizing multiple means of
communication, including print, email, text, website, social media and other emerging
technologies
b)Translate the needs of youth and their families to the St. Andrew’s congregation
c)In collaboration with the pastoral staff, educate the congregation on issues facing youth and
families of St. Andrew’s and the community
6)Events
a)With staff and ministry servants, plan church wide events that include participation by the
youth
b)When possible, seek to collaborate with other youth ministries to help youth understand the
ecumenical nature of church ministry
7)Collaboration
a)Participate constructively in weekly staff meetings
b)Serve as a staff representative to and standing member of the Education Ministry Area
c)Assist in the annual review of the Safe Sanctuary Policy of the church and lead youth
ministry within the policy
d)Promote youth participation in ministry leadership across the church life, including but not
limited to Worship, Music and Outreach
e)Coordinate schedules with music directors for youth choir and encourage participation by
youth
f)Meet periodically with Coordinator of Children’s Ministry to ensure a seamless transition of
kids between programs and with the Associate Pastor of Discipleship to assist with the
transition from Youth Ministry to adult discipleship
g)Promote dialogue and authentic relationships between youth and adults within the
congregation
h)Serve in other capacities as periodically required
Relationships:
1)Reports to the Senior Pastor
2)Works closely with the Youth, Education Ministry Area, ministry servants, Associate Pastor of
Discipleship, Coordinator of Children’s Ministry, and other staff members, committees, and
ministry areas as needed
Requirements:
1)Committed follower of Jesus Christ who maintain a Christian lifestyle and values as
demonstrated by actions and demeanor
2)Bachelor’s Degree and/or comparable experience working with youth is highly desirable
3)Strong skill in verbal, written and electronic communication, leadership, collaboration
4)Willingness to make St. Andrew’s your spiritual home
5)Self-starter who can work independently
6)Continuous learner
Current position status: Part-time (up to 30 hours per week)
