UPDATES:

429,000 people have arrived in Cox’s Bazar district since 25 august, this is on top of the 167,000 people who had arrived in the pre-ceding months. The Inter Sector Working Group is working on contingency figure of 1.2 million people affected, to include contingency figure of 300,000 new arrivals, preexisting arrivals and some host families. Shelter needs are significant.

The Prime Minister’s plan includes the allocations of a 2000 acre (8 million m2) new site at Kutupolong with therequirementthat 14 000 row shelters will be constructed in 10 days. Cost estimates for the construction of these shelters give a total budget requirement of 140 million USD for shelter construction only.

The current shelter strategy is in two phases: initial shelter distribution accompanied by training and a second phase of shelter upgrade.

Site planning in the new site is being developed by a site planning task force formed with technical experts from IOM and UNHCR. The rapid and spontaneous settlements in the new site are going to pose challenges for the implementation of site plan, when ready.
