Cooperative Education (Co-op), Grades 11/12 – open

COP 4XC (4 credits) COP2XC (2 credits)

The co-op program is broken down into six components:

1. The Pre-Class Sessions

  • Due to the nature of Co-op, the program has to operate a little differently from other (traditional) school subjects
  • Months before you start the semester, you may be meeting with a Co-op Teacher to accomplish a variety of tasks:
  • Complete the Co-op Application Form
  • Determine the career/workplace opportunity you would like to pursue
  • Apply for Central and Regional Placements
  • Apply, prepare and interview for work placements
  • Solidify your work placement for the semester

2. Pre-placement Classes

  • Before you go out to the workplace, you must attend class sessions Topics covered are listed in the Course Outline and include workplace safety, interview skills, Employment Law in Ontario and emergency first aid certification.

3. Work Placement and Regular Monitoring

  • This means regular attendance at your work placement. Instead of attending classes at school, you spend the required number of hours experiencing the world of work. Credits are earned based on successful completion of both school assignments and workplace experiences.
  • Your Co-op Teacher will communicate and visit with you regularly (doing Monitor Visit as prescribed by The Ministry of Education) to ensure you stay on track.

4. Integration Classes

  • You must come back to school, one day every second week usually (or as outlined by your Co-op Teacher) to do assignments and to discuss progress.

5. Assignments

  • As in all school subjects, assignments are a must. Most Co-op assignments are designed to connect your work placement experiences to your school courses.

6. Final/Exam

  • You will be asked to complete a Rich Task (a Demonstration of Learning) at your workplace and the Final Portfolio Assignment. You will find this to be of practical value for your career development.
