Book of Demise of various tenements and lands in Craven, with various arrears formerly pending in the same place,
Made by Edmund Eltoftes esquire, Thomas Talbott gentleman, John Swynglehirst and Lawrence Preston,
By virtue of a certain commission of our noble lord, Henry, Earl of Cumberland, directed to the aforesaid commissioners, bearing date the 16th day of December in the first year of the reign of Queen Mary, just as fully appears in this book of demise.

Richard Moreby, the son of John Moreby, took from the said commissioners one cottage, with the appurtenances, in Carleton, by warrant, for the term of his life, to hold to him after the death of the said John his father, and he renders annually 2s as a fine, and for gersum as at the head.

Henry Watkynson took as before one tenement, with the appurtenances, in the same place, by warrant, for the term of his life, to hold to him after the death of Elizabeth Watkynson, widow, his mother, and he renders annually 8s 3d as a fine, and for gersum as appears etc.

William Bens, the son of William Bens, took as before, by warrant, one messuage, with the appurtenances, for the term of his life, to hold to him after the death of the said William his father, and his mother during her widowhood, and he renders annually 5s, and for entry [? in error for gersum - ingress’ not gress’] as appears etc.

John Gawthrope took from the aforesaid commissioners one tenement and half a bovate of land, with the appurtenances, by warrant etc, to hold to him after the widowhood of Margaret Gawthrope, his mother and the relict of Robert Rypons, for the term of his life, and he renders annually 5s 6d, and for entry [? as above] as appears etc.

John Rypons alias Robynson took from the aforesaid commissioners, by warrant, one tenement and half a bovate of land, with the appurtenances, to hold to him for the term of his life after the widowhood of Elizabeth Robynson, his mother and the relict of Robert Rypons, and he renders annually 5s 6d, and for entry [? as above] as appears.

Richard Cokeson, the son of George Cokeson, as before, took one messuage and one bovate of land, with the appurtenances, and a parcel of demesne land in Newfeld, with the appurtenances, by warrant, to hold to him, after the death of his father, for the term of his life, and he renders annually 27s, and for entry/gersum as appears etc.

Adam Carr, the son of William Carr, took from the aforesaid commissioners one messuage, with the appurtenances, in the same place, by warrant, now in the tenure of the said William, to hold to him, after the death of the same William, for the term of his life. Richard Coykeson, the son of John Coykeson, took as before, one messuage, one bovate of land, with a parcel of demesne land in Newfeld in the same place, with the appurtenances, now in the tenure of the said John his father, to hold to him, by warrant, for the term of his life, after the death of his father, and he renders annually 29s 8d, and for entry/gersum as appears etc.

Robert Payley, the son of Roger Payley, took from the aforesaid commissioners one tenement, with the appurtenances, in the same place, now in the tenure of the said Robert his father, to hold to him, by warrant, for his life, provided however that he should permit the said Roger his father to have half the aforesaid tenement during his life. And he renders annually 14s 8d, and for entry/gersum as appears etc.

Christopher Preston, the son of Richard Preston senior, deceased, came before Henry, Earl of Cumberland, and his council, at Skipton, and took one tenement, with the appurtenances, in the same place, lying at Merebeke, lately in the tenure of the said Richard his father, to hold to him, for the term of his life. And he renders annually as appears at the end [33s 4d], and for entry/gersum as at the head [£10].
Provided always that he should permit Ann, the relict of the said Richard, peacefully to occupy all the aforesaid tenement, with the appurtenances, until the feast of the Purification of the Blessed Mary next in the future.
And after the aforesaid feast, the same Richard Christopher should permit the said relict to have a moiety of the said tenement, during her widowhood, without disturbance.
And that the said Christopher shall not sublet or demise any part of the said tenement to any person, other than the aforesaid during her widowhood.
And that the same Ann, similarly, shall not sublet or demise any part of her moiety of the aforesaid tenement, other than to the said Christopher,
Under a penalty etc to be forfeited by the said party into the hands of the same Earl as is aforesaid.

Henry Knolles, the son of James Knolles, by the surrender of the said James, took one shop in the same place, now in the tenure of the said James, to hold to him, for the term of his life, after the death of the said James his father. And he renders annually 4d, and for entry/gersum as appears.

Christopher Brown took from the said Commissioners one tenement, with the appurtenances, in the same place, now in the tenure of the said Christopher. And he renders annually 19s 6d, and for entry/gersum as appears, over and above 29s 3d formerly paid to Anthony Dale and allowed by the lord.

Henry Carr,the son of James Carr, took as before one tenement, with the appurtenances, in the same place, now in the tenure of the said James his father, to hold to him, after the death of the aforesaid James his father, for the term of his life. And he renders annually 12s, and for entry/gersum as appears.

Adam Somerscallestook one tenement, with the appurtenances, in the same place, now in the tenure of the said Adam, to hold to him, by warrant, for the term of his life. And he renders annually 37s, and for entry/gersum as appears, over and above 40s formerly paid to Anthony Dale and Thomas Lyster and allowed by the lord.

Paul Lawson, the son of Thomas Lawson, took from the said Commissioners one cottage, with the appurtenances, in the same place, now in the tenure of the aforesaid Thomas, to hold to him, for the term of his life, after the death of the aforesaid Thomas his father. And he renders annually 5s, and for entry/gersum as appears.

Lawrence Smyth took from the said Commissioners one cottage, by warrant, lately in the tenure of Hugh Smyth, to hold to him, for the term of his life, provided however that he should permit the relict of the said Hugh Smyth to have a moiety of the said cottage during her widowhood, and that he should pay to the said relict, during her widowhood, every week, one penny. And he renders annually 2s, and for entry/gersum as appears.

Hugh Webster, the son of John Webster, took as before, by warrant, one messuage, with the appurtenances, in the same place, in the tenure of the said John, to hold to him, after the death of the aforesaid John his father, for the term of his life. James Payley, the son of Robert Payley, took from the said commissioners, by warrant, one messuage, with the appurtenances, in the same place, at Mewyth, now in the tenure of the said John Robert, to hold to him, after the death of the aforesaid Robert his father, and his mother, for the term of his life. And he renders annually 30s 4d, and for entry/gersum as appears.

William Tailour, the son of Robert Tailour, took as before, one messuage and one bovate of land, with the appurtenances, in the same place, in the tenure of the said Robert, to hold to him, after the death of the said Robert his father, and his wife, for the term of his life. Edward Hustler, the son of John Hustler, through the release of William Hustler his elder brother, took from the lord, through his commissioners, one messuage, with the appurtenances, in the same place, by warrant, to hold to him, for the term of his life, after the death of the said John his brother, And he renders annually 15s 1½d, and for entry/gersum as appears, over and above 15s 4½d released and allowed said by the lord.
