Purpose

To apply building regulations and associated legislation in pursuance of the Building Control function

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. To administer the Building Control function primarily with a `service to the customer' perspective and accordingly, to meet or otherwise communicate with members of the public, professionals, builders and internal contacts at such times and in such a manner as is necessary to constructively assist those in need of guidance on meeting requirements.
  1. To assess deposited plans and specifications for compliance with building regulations and associated legislation, to prepare relevant reports and operate necessary administration procedures.
  1. To make appropriate inspections of, and to supervise and enforce building regulations and associated legislation in relation to, certain projects of building work in the Borough, and to prepare relevant reports. Also, to undertake similar activities in relation to unauthorised or contravening building work and dangerous structures including out of hours on a rota basis.
  1. To maintain accurate records of inspections of building work and other structures, including the initiation of invoices relating to Building Control fees. Also, to operate relevant administration procedures relating to the recording of daily activities.
  1. In appropriate cases, to make formal statements and to attend court hearings as an expert witness in prosecution and/or enforcement proceedings.
  1. Delivery of an effective and appropriate service to ethnic minority service users, fairly and without unlawful discrimination.
  1. As a term of your employment you can be required to undertake such other duties commensurate with your grade, and/or hours of work, as may reasonably be required of you at your initial place of work or at any other of the Authority's establishments.
  1. To promote the personal development of team members by providing supervision, guidance and assistance as necessary and identifying their training and development needs to ensure they have the skills needed to achieve agreed service related and corporate objectives.
  1. Contribute to the continuous improvement in the delivery of customer satisfaction ensuring all work is carried out to meet agreed expectations for customer service and defined performance indicators.

This job description outlines the main duties and responsibilities of the position and is designed for the benefit of both the post holder and the Council in understanding the prime functions of the post. It should not be regarded as exclusive nor exhaustive as there may be other duties and requirements associated with and covered by the grading of the post.

In particular it should be noted that the job is designed primarily to contribute to the delivery of the building control function. However, the Service is committed to the development of a flexible staff structure equipped with the broad range of skills and abilities required to ensure the attainment and maintenance of high standards of service delivery in all aspects of the Planning and Regeneration Service. Accordingly the post may be seconded to assist other functions within the Service subject to overall demands placed upon it.
