Conveniently managing parcel deliveries by app, tablet or desktop PC: DPD launches new Parcel Navigator

The central dashboard for all those wishing to customise theirparcel deliveries

All parcel consignees can access a wide range of options for redirecting parcels

Preferred time window and optional registration currently being planned

Aschaffenburg, 6August 2014 – With its new online platform international parcel and express service provider DPD is offering even greater convenience when it comes to taking delivery of parcel shipments. DPD's Parcel Navigator is designed specifically to meet the requirements of private consignees, providing them with a central dashboard for conveniently integrating deliveries into their everyday routine. A range of options are available for this purpose, including postponing the day of delivery or having the parcel delivered to a different address, e.g. the consignee's place of work or a DPD ParcelShop.

"DPD has set itself the target of delivering the 'digital parcel'," explains Michael Knaupe, Director B2C Products & Services at DPD GeoPost (Deutschland) GmbH. "Consignees of DPD parcels can use their smartphone or tablet to adapt parcel deliveries to their lives – and not the other way round. DPD's new Parcel Navigator makes it easier than ever before."

At paketnavigator.de all consignees who are expecting a parcel from DPD can control the individual delivery themselves. For example the online platform makes it possible to specify the neighbour to whom a parcel is to be delivered. In addition consignees can simply enter an alternative delivery address, change the day of delivery or arrange for the parcel to be left in a safe place. Aclearly arranged map also indicates nearby DPD ParcelShops to which the delivery can be made, while at the same time showing the business hours of the individual shops. As soon as the parcel is ready for collection at a DPD ParcelShop the consignee receives notification by email.

When a parcel is on its way to the consignee the Parcel Navigator displays a direct link to DPD's live tracking function. Here consignees can see exactly where the parcel is at any specific time. As a result they knowprecisely when the delivery driver will be ringing the doorbell and no longer have to worry about missing the delivery of their parcel.

During the development of paketnavigator.de user-friendliness was given top priority. Redirecting parcels is now easier than it has ever been – with the number of mouse clicks reduced to an absolute minimum and the most frequently used options always shown most prominently in a display which is optimised for tablet users. The Navigator is available as an app from the Android Play Store and from the Apple App Store.

At present there are two possibilities for managing parcel deliveries using the Parcel Navigator. Today many consignees already receive an advance email providing them with a direct link to the Parcel Navigator, so that they can redirect their shipment if necessary. The only requirement is that the consignor should automatically transmit the relevant consignee data to DPD. In addition the Parcel Navigator can be used by all consignees who are not located at home when the first delivery attempt is made. In this case the delivery driver leaves a parcel notification card which enables the consignee to access the Parcel Navigator by QR code or the individual parcel notification number. Optional registration of consignees is planned for the future, so that they will be able to take advantage of the Parcel Navigator even before the first delivery attempt is made.

Even greater flexibility coming soon: delivery within 90 minutes

In future the Parcel Navigator will enable DPD to make parcel shipping even more flexible. One option, for example, is to make it possible for consignees in selected cities to book a delivery within a 90-minute time window as soon as the parcel is to leave the DPD distribution centre – regardless of the consignorwho shipped the parcel. Same-day delivery within 90 minutes or within a specified two-hour time window is already available in 19 major German cities. This is made possible thanks to DPD's cooperation with tiramizoo, the same-day specialist in which DPD has been the main shareholder since the autumn of 2013.

The background: DPD's B2C offensive

DPD has set itself the target of becoming the innovation leader in shipping to private consignees (B2C) and doubling its share of this market to 15% by 2018 at the latest. In the process DPD is concentrating on those customers and shippers who attach great importance to maximum transparency and flexibility. An important component of this strategy is an exact prediction of the delivery time window. Since July 2014 DPD has been able to predict down to the last half-hour exactly when the delivery driver will arrive. On an online map consignees can see in real time how many more stops the driver has to make before he will be ringing the doorbell with their own parcel. Consignees are notified of the delivery the day before and have a range of options to redirect the shipment – if necessary right up to 5 minutes before the actual delivery is made.

In addition to the new delivery services DPD's B2C offensive covers a range of further strategic components. These include the expansion of its German and international ParcelShop network and the introduction of Saturday deliveries throughout Germany. In individual regions Saturday is already a normal delivery day, while regular Saturday deliveries throughout the country will be available by May 2015.
