CONSUMER SAFETY INFORMATION SHEET

Wood Products Treated with Copper Naphthenate

The US EPA requires that a Consumer Information Sheet be made available for wood treated with Restricted Use Pesticides (RUP). Copper naphthenate is not classified as a RUP due to its minimal toxicity profile, but the following consumer information sheet is provided for your reference.

CONSUMER INFORMATION

These wood products have been preserved by treatment with copper naphthenate preservative. Copper naphthenate is a waterborne or organic hydrocarbon solvent preservative formulation containing the EPA-registered pesticide copper naphthenate that protects wood from insect attack and decay. Residential wood products treated with copper naphthenate should be used only where such protection is necessary.

Exposure to copper naphthenateor wood treated with copper naphthenatemay present certain hazards. Therefore, the followingprecautions should be taken both when handling and determining where to use copper naphthenate-treated wood products. Before working with copper naphthenate-treated wood, you should read and understand the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for copper naphthenate-treated wood.

USE SITE PRECAUTIONS

Residential wood products treated with copper naphthenate are to be used for exteriorabove-groundor ground contact applications, as described in the EPA pesticide label. Do not use copper naphthenate-treated wood products in interior applications.

Copper naphthenate-treated wood products should be covered or sealed to prevent accidental exposure to domestic animals that may chew on or lick the treated wood.

Do not use copper naphthenate-treated wood products under circumstances where the preservative may come in contact with food or feed. Examples of such use would be for cutting boards, counter tops or structures for storing silage.

Do not use copper naphthenate-treated wood products for the construction of beehives. Copper naphthenate-treated wood products should not be used where they may come into direct or indirect contact with drinking water for people or animals.

HANDLING PRECAUTIONS

Dispose of unused copper naphthenate-treated wood products in accordance with all local, state or federal regulations. This may include ordinary trash collection or burial.

Copper naphthenate-treated wood products should not be burned in open fires or stoves, fireplaces or residential boilers because chemical components and their combustion products may be released as part of the smoke and ash.

Unused copper naphthenate-treated wood product from commercial or industrial use (e.g., construction sites) may be burned only in commercial or industrial incinerators or boilers in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.

Avoid frequent or prolonged inhalation of sawdust from all treated wood products. Use local exhaust ventilation on power tools where practical and employ good housekeeping practices. If an inhalation hazard exists when sawing and machining treated wood, consider wearing a filtering facepiece respirator (dust mask) in accordance with exposure levels and related regulatory requirements. Whenever possible, these operations should be performed outdoors to avoid indoor accumulations of sawdust from the treated wood. Wood dust is combustible, and therefore simple fire-prevention precautions should be observed.

Avoid frequent or prolonged skin contact with all treated wood products. When handling them, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and gloves are recommended. When power-sawing and machining any wood product, wear suitable eye protection to protect the eyes from flying particles.

After working with any treated wood product, and before eating, drinking or using tobacco products, wash exposed skin areas thoroughly.

Preservative residue or sawdust may accumulate on clothing. Before reuse, wash work clothes separately from other household clothing.
