CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENTS
§ Monitoring, photographing and documenting the reinstallation of a 300 HP submersible water pump in a 480-foot deep well for a municipality in the State of Virginia. My scope was to monitor the proper reinstallation of the motor, pump and its submersible cable. Several pump and/motor failures had occurred at this site. The cost of this operation, which required more than a week to complete, was $50,000 or more for each replacement cycle. Several months after the reinsertion of the unit, no reported failures had occurred. My report documenting my observations and opinions of the loss was approximately 50 pages long and contained approximately 60 digital photographs. (2006)
§ Designed electrical system of fire damaged 21-unit apartment complex conforming to existing load constraints of a maximum of a single 300-ampere and 150-ampere feed. Balanced single-phase individual unit loads to limit loading on each feeder to approximately 90% of capacity. Interfaced with City of Houston Code Enforcement division to resolve electrical code issues. (2005)
§ Evaluation of improper electrical and mechanical design criteria resulting in high resistance connection in the alternator charging circuits and subsequent fire in the engine compartments of the fleet of busses for a major Texas city for purposes of litigation of several millions of dollars. Overheating of this particular connection caused several serious fires in the busses. (2003)
§ Responsible for modifications of used General Electric 3.3 KV 50 HZ vertical lift metal-clad switchgear for use on a 2.4KV 60 HZ system. Modified and replaced existing 50 HZ relays and metering as necessary for use on a 60 HZ system. This project was performed by M & I Industries in their Beaumont, Texas facility. (2001)
§ Responsible for design of 4.8KV Interrupter Switch Lineup for the purpose of resale to an offshore client. This function was performed at TIMCO Ltd. in their Beaumont, Texas facility. (2000)
§ Lead Engineer on Powell Industries first line-ups of Metal-Clad Switchgear fabricated for WESCOSA, an emerging Saudi Arabian manufacturer of electrical equipment. This was the initial step of Powell Industries endeavors to expand its market base and develop a significant manufacturing presence in the Country of Saudi Arabia. (1998)
§ Responsible for the design of a continuous lineup of switchgear consisting of (23) 7.2KV Vacuum Circuit Bkrs. and 400-ampere 7.2KV Vacuum Contactors. Also designed the Interposing Relay Panel to be installed with the switchgear lineup in an industrial facility in Maoming, China. The function of the interposing relay panel was to act as an interface between the 6.6 KV switchgear and MCC and other devices. This lineup of switchgear, motor control centers and interposing relay panels had a total dollar volume exceeding $1,000,000. I was responsible for preparing Bills of Material, Physical Drawings, Three Line Diagrams and Control Schematics for this project. (1995)
§ Design of Powell Industries' first 2.4KV Vertical Pump Controller to comply with Aramco's new standard 16-AMSS-507. (1993)
§ Responsible for the design of Powell Industries' first lineup of metal-clad switchgear to utilize Basler Electric's Excitation Support Package. This exciter package provided excitation power for a Brush-Type 7500HP Synchronous Motor. (1993)
§ Performed electrical checkout of a power generation module manufactured by Powell Industries Offshore in a 24-hour period to satisfy stringent scheduling requirements. This generation module, fabricated for Arco Oil, consisted of two 500KW diesel generators and their associated switchgear. (1984)
§ Responsible for design modifications of Powell Industries' 3000-ampere Vacuum Circuit Breaker to increase the continuous current rating to 3750-amperes. I accomplished this by use of forced air cooling and oversized bus bar risers. (1984)
§ Performed developmental and conformance continuous current testing of Powell Industries' first 3000-ampere Powl-Vac Circuit Breaker. Designed finned "radiators" for use in the breaker design to maximize cooling of the Mitsubishi Vac. Interrupters. The radiators are used in the current version of the 3000-ampere breaker. (1982)
§ Performed functional inspection of (10) Power Control Modules containing electrical generation and distribution equipment such as 13.8KV, 4.16KV and 480V switchgear, diesel generators and oil- and air-filled transformers. These Power Control Modules were also equipped with HVAC and Pressurization Systems as well as AC and DC Panel boards, UPS Systems and Fire and Gas Detection Systems. These modules were manufactured for Al-Jubail Petroleum in the Middle East with a total dollar volume of approximately $6,000,000. I was responsible for preparing the As-Built Drawings generated as a result of the changes found during the functional inspection. (1981)
§ Performed electrical checkout of Powell Industries first order for equipment for Dallas Power and Light. These two lineups of interconnected 13.8KV switchgear were equipped with multiple main busses, frequency based load shedding schemes, automatic re-closures and breaker interlocking to permit feeding various loads from multiple power sources.
