CONSTRUCTION HAZARD COMUNICATION PROGRAM

This program has been prepared to comply with the requirements of the Federal OSHA STANDARD 1926.59, HIOSH Hazard Communication Standard, and to ensure that information for the safe use, handling and storage of hazardous chemicals is provided and made available to the employees.

This program includes guidelines on identification of chemical hazards, the preparation and proper use of container labels, placards and other warning devices.

I. CHEMICAL INVENTORY

A. (Company) maintains an inventory of all known chemicals in use on the work site. All employees will be advised of the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and it's contents during the Toolbox Safety Meetings.

B. ALL hazardous chemicals brought to the work site by (Company) will be included and added on to the hazardous chemical inventory.

C. ALL subcontractors will comply with the requirements of this program.

II. CONTAINER LABELING

A. All chemicals on-site will be stored in their original approved containers with a proper label except small quantities for immediate use. Any container not properly labeled shall be turned into the field or main office for labeling or proper disposal.

B. Workers may dispense chemicals from the original containers with a proper label except small quantities for immediate use. . Any small quantity of chemical remaining after work is completed must be returned to the original container or disposed of properly.

C. No unmarked containers of any size is to be left unattended in the work area.

D. (Company) will rely on manufacturers applied labels whenever possible and will ensure that these labels are maintained. Containers that are not labeled or witch the manufacturer's label has been removed will be relabeled. Labels should include warnings as to which body organ may be affected and how.

E. (Company) will ensure that each container is labeled with the identity of the hazardous chemical and any appropriate hazard warnings.

III. MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (MSDS)

A. Employees working with hazardous chemicals may see a copy of the (MSDS). Copies of the MSDS will be available at the project office of (Company).

B. ALL new chemicals delivered to the project shall not be accepted without the necessary MSDS.

C. ALL employees will be trained in (Company)’s HAZ-COM program requirements and understanding how to read the MSDS.

IV. EMPLOYEE TRAINING

A. Employees will be trained to work safely with hazardous chemicals in their work environment. An overview of the company safety policy and information on the HAZ-COM Standard including:

1) Labeling and warning systems requirements

2) An explanation of (MSDS).

B. Physical and health hazards associated with chemicals in the workplace.

C. Protective measures to be taken.

D. Emergency procedures to follow if employees are exposed to hazardous chemicals.

E. Safe work practices, emergency response and use of personal protective equipment.

F. Methods that may be used to detect the release of hazardous chemicals in the work place.

G. Review with employees the chemicals present in their work environment.

H. The location and availability of the written HAZ-COM Program, list of chemicals, and MSDS sheets.

V. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

ALL required PPE such as gloves, eye protection, dust or vapor mask will be provided by the company. ALL employees shall follow the instructions and use the PPE as instructed.

VI. EMERGENCY RESPONSE

A. Any incident of over exposure or spill of any hazardous chemical substance must be reported to your supervisor or the project office immediately.

B. The general superintendent or office manager will be responsible for ensuring that proper emergency response actions are taken in all accidental leak/spill situations.

VII. HAZARDS OF NON-ROUTINE TASKS

A. Project superintendents, managers, and foremen will inform employees of any special task(s) that may arise which would involve possible exposure to hazardous chemicals.

B. Review of safe work procedures and use of required PPE will be conducted prior to such tasks. Where necessary, areas will be posed to indicate the nature of the hazard involved.

VIII. POSTING

(Company) has posted information for employees on the HAZ-COM Standard. A copy of the HAZ-COM program will be posted there on the project's safety bulletin board at the project office.

IX. NOTIFICATION

ALL new employees shall be notified during their indoctrination that there may be hazardous chemicals present at their job sites.
