Constituency Campaigner Role

Oxfam works with others to end poverty and suffering. Local activism is a vital part of our campaigning. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to become Constituency Campaigners, to take responsibility for raising the profile of Oxfam’s concerns with their elected representatives - their local Member of Parliament, the Scottish Parliament or Welsh Assembly Members. The Constituency Campaigner Programme aims to give you the knowledge, tools and support to make sure your voice is heard at the highest level.
What will I be doing as a Constituency Campaigner?

As a Constituency Campaigner you will take part in training sessions to build your skills, and use these skills to influence your local politicians and the Government. Activities will include:

  • Attending an induction day.
  • Attending additional skills building sessions.
  • Taking part in a range of campaigning activities. These will vary according to what works best for you and is most effective in your patch, but might include:

- Meeting with your elected representative at least twice in one year, if possible.

- Writing a tailored letter to your elected representative around 4 times per year.

- Engaging your elected representative via twitter and other social media.

- Providing regular updates/feedback on local activity and your representative’s policy position to your local Public Affairs Officer and your local Oxfam group.

- Organising/ supporting public events involving your elected representative.

- Identifying and taking timely actions (often at short notice) as opportunities arise.

What support and training will I receive?
Oxfam’s Public Affairs Team will support you in developing your skills and ability to campaign effectively in your constituency. You will be encouraged to be proactive but we will provide you with:

  • An induction day introducing you to the programme and effective political campaigning
  • Skills building sessions in your region
  • Monthly updates on political and policy developments
  • Monthly telephone support sessions
  • Ad hoc briefings and materials to support your campaigning
  • A range of policy ‘asks’ and political actions
  • Ongoing advice, support and development

It is estimated that the role could take up to 1 – 2 hours a week. However you can give as much or as little time to this role as you have available.

What can I expect to get from the Programme?

In becoming a Constituency Campaigner with Oxfam you will be making a real difference by campaigning to end poverty and suffering. You will learn new skills and gain experience in influencing politicians with support from Oxfam along the way. Our training will provide you with the opportunity to learn from Oxfam staff and other programme participants and build your own campaigning networks. We will support you in getting your voice heard at the highest level - how much you get from the programme will be up to you.
