What do you feel your child’s educational needs are and what do you feel your child needs in School?

****** has Down Syndrome and has significant global developmental delay and learning difficulties. He/she requires full time one to one support to enable him/her to learn, make learning activities particularly interesting and play orientated, and to keep him/her on task, as he/she is very easily distracted. He/she will need one to one attention to assist his/her understanding and to enable him/her to contribute and communicate effectively in class. He/she will need to have lessons differentiated quite substantially, so that he/she will be able to progress alongside his/her peer group and reach his/her full potential.

What are your main concerns about your child’s education?

****** has very little speech and so will need significant support and input from a qualified speech and language therapist and a ‘Total Communication Environment in school’ which will include the use of signing and a visual timetable. We are concerned that he/she receive the kind of one to one support which will enable him/her to move forward successfully and confidently, encouraging independence wherever possible, while providing all the differentiated resources and strategies to make this possible, and enable him/her to take part in all lessons.

******* has no awareness of danger and will continue to require constant supervision at all times including unstructured times.

How do you think these can best be provided for?

****** needs can be fully met within a mainstream placement at ….name of school …with very close supervision, full time one to one support and the appropriate differentiation. His/her Assistant will need to break down tasks and learning activities into manageable chunks, providing lots of praise and encouragement.

He/she will need a support assistant and professionals in school who are aware of the current practices, advice and approaches regarding children with D.S. in mainstream school.

These answers/guidelines are designed to support your general information and provide parents/families with a few ideas. It is also important that you look at your child’s individual needs and requirements and add to these examples given and/or amend as necessary.

Feel free to give us a call if we can be of any further help.
