Connections with the Outside World Project

Directions: You may choose to create any of the following.

1.  An essay; at least 3 pages; typed and sent via Googledocs

2.  A voiced-over presentation that runs smoothly, using Prezi, Voicethread, Adobevoice, etc.

3.  An actual presentation you deliver to the class, lasting a minimum of 4 minutes

●  FCA 1: A thesis that clearly connects one historical / cultural influence to at least 4 important / specific details (of character, plot, or setting) within the film,

OR a thesis that uses an interpretive lens (feminist, historical, archetypal, Marxist, etc.) to perceive at least 4 important details of the film under a unified perspective.

●  FCA 2: An introduction contains thesis, short summary of film, and a preview of the points made within the essay; the conclusion contains a restatement of thesis; wraps up the topics/points of the essay, and leaves an impression

●  FCA 3: Specific use (citing and explanation/discussion) of researched material concerning the historical/cultural influence(s) or the application of the lens.

○  2 secondary (outside the film) sources properly cited

○  All sources must be from a reliable/credible/authoritative source or a point deduction will be calculated

●  FCA 4: The product is of quality—visuals, auditory, etc., --all elements are presented appropriately for academic work and represent a following of common conventions for the product of choice.

Step 1: Choosing a Film / You should choose a film that is appropriate for school; although, you will not be watching the movie in school. It should be a movie that has some research and criticism available and one that you have a personal/intellectual interest in seeing from an alternative perspective.

Step 3: Define a Thesis and Items to Examine to Prove Your Point

Examples:

The Wizard of Oz characters, namely, The Scarecrow, The Wicked Witch, The Tin Man, The Cowardly Lion, and Oz, himself, are all representations of various groups of people living and working in America during the turn of the 1900’s.

The Help is just as much a story about the subjugation of women and the tyranny of constraining gender roles as it is a story about the racial divide that exists in American culture.

Rocky, a true “underdog” story, is the reality of class warfare, the rich against the poor, played out on the streets of Philadelphia.
