Annual Conference 2016

“The Male in Analysis: Masculinity Issues in Psychodynamic Theory and Practice”

with Dr Anastasios Gaitanidis

In this conference, Dr Anastasios Gaitanidis will provide a comprehensive review of the existing psychoanalytic representations of masculinity. He will also critically examine how psychoanalytic theories and practices are still haunted by the legacy of the phallus, the privileging of the breast and/or the mother-child dyad which disregards or repudiates the relational dynamics of maleness. For this reason, he will propose new ways of conceptualising the position of the male, which involve both the enhancement of his capacity for critical reasoning, and broadening of his sphere of experience to include emotion and acknowledgement of desire. Finally, he will provide clinical examples from his work with male clients so as to illustrate how these new ways of understanding masculinity are linked to clinical practice.

Speaker

Dr Anastasios Gaitanidis is a Senior Lecturer in Counselling Psychology, Psychotherapy and Counselling at the University of Roehampton. He is also a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist in private practice. He is the editor of “Narcissism – A Critical Reader” (2007), and “The Male Analysis” (2011), and has published several papers in edited books, and peer-reviewed journals over the years.

Additional Speaker

Dr Hannah Humphry-Baker will present her research on “How do fathers make sense of their experience of stillbirth after therapy?” Research on stillbirth has focussed on the mother and less is known about the impact of this particular loss on fathers. The importance of recognising and legitimising the father’s experience, in therapy and a wider social context, will be discussed. The experience of being a father to a stillborn child will be thought about in terms of gender relations and masculinity issues, psychodynamic theory and practice.

Dr Hannah Humphry-Baker is the Head of Training at TCC, and a primary care counsellor in the NHS. She carried out this research with Dr Anastasios Gaitanidis at the University of Roehampton.
