Please see further details below and for the significant, positive impact on STEM pathways

Getting Smarter at the TimbuktuAcademy (GeSTA): 4-week, non-residential, for 20 elementary school students.

SummerScienceInstitute-MiddleSchool (SSI-M): 4-week, non-residential, for a total of 60 middle school students.

ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (BHSSC): 2-week, residential, for forty-eight (48) rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.

Summer Training and Enrichment Program (STEP): 2-week, residential, for a maximum of thirty-two (32) displaced students, affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, residing in East Baton Rouge Parish, and entering grades 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th.

Summer Enrichment at the TimbuktuAcademy (SETA): One session of six (6) weeks, non-residential, for 20 rising 9th grade students.

•Summer Science Institute (SSI): One session of 6 weeks, residential, for twenty (20) rising 12th graders

• Challenge 2000: One session of six (6) weeks, residential, for twenty (20) rising 10th and 11th graders.

Earth Science at the TimbuktuAcademy (ESTA): One session of 6 weeks, residential, for 20 high school students (Earth Science focus).

SIGNIFICANT IMPACT:

Due in part to the college portfolio the high school students (SSI, Challenge 2000, and ESTA) prepare during the summer, practically 100% of these student participants attend college upon their graduation from high school.

Approximately 80% of these summer scholars enroll in college science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) curricula.

The above large enrollment in STEM field is partly made possible by (1) the deliberate focus of the summer enrichment activities on mathematics, sciences, and English and (2) the quantum leaps the participant students make in improving their official ACT scores (They take it before the summer and take it after the summer): for the last three summers, the average gain in ACT score registered by the Academy’s high school scholars has been 5 to six times the average gain make possible by a typical high school during the same six-week period, according to ACT data.

These summer programs dramatically increase the awareness of, interest in, and the academic preparation for STEM college curricula. Upon their matriculation in college, the ten-strand systemic mentoring program of the Academy guarantees their superior performance in a STEM field, on time graduation, and the pursuit of graduate degrees by more than 50% of the college alumni.

PRE- AND POST ACT SCORES OF PRE-COLLEGE SCHOLARS

CHALLENGE 2000 AT THE TIMBUKTUACADEMY

SUMMER 2004

SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY AND A&MCOLLEGE

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA

The names, school addresses, and other contact information are available to the Department of the Navy, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) (i.e., major funding agencies)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 prevents the TimbuktuAcademy and SUBR from publishing students’ names along with academic achievement scores. The complete files, which specific students’ names, are available for ONR review anytime it so desires.

Significance of Results

Considering that an average high school year leads to an average ACT score increase of 2.5, it is indeed an accomplishment to have quantum leaps of 6 or 3 points for six-weeks.

The average improvement for the 32 students who took the posttest is 2.47 for the six-week period. With 180 school days in the year, or 36 weeks, this performance of the Academy for six weeks, when normalized with respect to the time spent on learning, is approximately six (6) times (exactly 5.93) that of an average school over a year!

The average increase of 3 for the 6 weeks of the summer programs is more than six (6) times the increase a typical high school produces over the same duration! Two key reasons for this dramatically superior performance of the TimbuktuAcademy are (a) its insistence on a verified mastery of grammar by participants and (b) its application of the Law of Human Performance (i.e., ensuring adequate Time on Tasks for every subject).
