CONDITION SCHOOL EVACUATION

This decision is the decision of the principal. Principals should contact law enforcement personnel and involve them in any decision where evacuation is in question due to extenuating circumstances. Approval to not evacuate must come from the central office and be supported by local law enforcement.

A. Examples of situations where Condition School Evacuation protocol may be initiated: a bomb threat has been deemed as real, release of chemicals that adversely affect the health and safety of students or staff; and any other event that requires the evacuation of the building.

B. The building administrator will inform all school staff that Condition School Evacuation is being implemented by use of the intercom. Measures should be taken to ensure that personnel in the outlying buildings or areas without intercom/phone/radio capability are notified in person. Inform the central office of the evacuation. All students and staff shall evacuate the building immediately and proceed to their assembly areas.

C. Once at their assembly areas, teachers should report the status of their students and staff to the assembly area coordinator. Staff shall carry their class rosters and emergency procedures with them to their assembly areas. Current student roster and emergency procedures are required anytime the building is evacuated.

D. If students are not in class at the time the condition is announced, they should proceed to their assembly area and notify their teacher.

E. Students will not be allowed to leave their assembly areas unless the teacher obtains authorization from the main office.

F. Teachers should brief students that the school as been placed under Condition Full Evacuation. Students should be given instructions as appropriate as to what they should do. School staff not assigned to classroom duties should follow the school’s procedures for evacuating the building. They should also report any suspicious activity to the main office immediately.

G. Once all teachers and students are at the assembly area, the assembly area coordinator (designated by the principal) will assume control of everyone.

H. If the situation dictates and only by the command of the principal, a campus evacuation may be implemented.

CONDITION CAMPUS EVACUATION

A. A campus evacuation may be announced after a school evacuation has been completed. Inform the central office of the evacuation. KEEP STUDENTS OFF OF CELL PHONES! Once all teachers and students are assembled on the assembly area, the principal (or his/her designee) will give the command to evacuate the campus. The procedures will vary, depending on if students are at the primary or secondary evacuation site.

B. Primary Site Campus Evacuation – The primary campus evacuation assembly area is:

If the principal declares a campus evacuation, the site coordinator will direct the teachers to lead students to the evacuation site. A campus evacuation will likely be done with the assistance of the police department to help block traffic. If police are not available, the evacuation site coordinator will appoint four school personnel to assist. Once at the site, the students will be kept in areas that allow their teacher to keep accountability of students.

C. Secondary Site Campus Evacuation – The secondary campus evacuation assembly area is:

If the students are to be moved by busses from the evacuation sites, the principal (or his/her designee) will coordinate with the transportation director.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION BAGS

(pages 91-92 of school plan)

All schools have an emergency evacuation kit to be taken from the school during an emergency evacuation. It is essential that this kit be kept updated and kept in the main office in a location known to many. This kit will become the portable “command center” during the first critical minutes of any crisis which require the evacuation of the facility. The administrator or a designated staff member should take the kit whenever the building is evacuated. This kit should also be taken during drills for consistency with response protocols, and should not be used to provide the contents for day-to-day operation of the school (clip boards, bull-horns, etc.)
