Computerized Motor Control Applications

Project Report

When we came here, we were three strangers from different schools and cities. We quickly adapted to Koç University, and started to work in the Koç University Nano-Optics Research Laboratory.

Our task was to build a computer controlled motorized rotation stage.. This stage is going to be used to rotate a l/2 plate, which will enable the control of the laser power in another project.

First, we gathered the supplies necessary for our project from Karaköy. These included a stepper motor, the electronics control circuit, and a ball bearing. We also needed metal parts in order to attach the pieces of the motorized rotation stage together. For this purpose, we designed our own parts using the AutoCAD software. Then we contacted a machine shop and sent them the drawings. As we were waiting for the parts to arrive, we started to develop a program to control motor using LabVIEW environment. After the custom parts have arrived from the machine shop we assembled the motorized rotation stage. The LabVIEW program was finished a few days later. Finally, we showed the computerized control of our motorized rotation stage.

During the time we spent at Koç University we have learned how to take part in a research project and to work as a team. Overall, the project we have performed was an outstanding experience showing us the academic life.
