Welcome to Computer Skills & Application I! I hope that everyone had a great summer. I have so many wonderful things planned for this semester. Let me first start out by telling you that this class is geared toward teaching you the fundamentals of computer skills & applications and getting you ready for any future technology that will help guide you into your future careers.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Computer Skills & Applications (Part I) will be taught in 5 (3 week modules):
Computer Skills and Applications (Keyboarding Module 1 – Alpha Keys)
This module is designed to teach basic keying skills, consisting of fluent manipulation of all alphabetic letters. Emphasis is on daily use of a computer system and appropriate software to provide integrated training through a learn/practice/sustain/assess plan of skill building.
Computer Skills and Applications (Keyboarding Module 2 – Number/Symbol and Numeric Keypad)
This module is designed to teach basic keying skills, consisting of fluent manipulation of all numeric keys as well as the symbols and the numeric keypad. Emphasis is on daily use of a computer system and appropriate software to provide integrated training through a learn/practice/sustain/assess plan of skill building.
Computer Skills and Applications (Keyboarding Module 3 – Building Speed and Accuracy)
This module is designed to increase keyboarding speed and accuracy when using the touch method. Emphasis is on daily use of a computer system, speed and accuracy skill building techniques and appropriate software to provide integrated training through a learn/practice/sustain/assess plan of skill building.
Computer Skills and Applications (Word Processing Basics and Business Correspondence)
This module is designed to teach the basic skills in word processing as well as document formatting rules for letters, memorandums and emails in the business community. Emphasis is on daily use of a computer system and appropriate software to provide integrated training through a learn/practice/sustain/assess plan of skill building.
Computer Skills and Applications (Word Processing Advanced Business Documents)
This module is designed to teach the advanced skills in word processing and document formatting for advanced business documents such as: agendas, minutes, research reports and resumes. Emphasis is on daily use of a computer system and appropriate software to provide integrated training through a learn/practice/sustain/assess plan of skill building.
The use of computers has become part of the everyday life of all people; therefore, the ability to use computer skills & applications efficiently is very beneficial. At the end of the course, you will take an end-of-course test called VoCATS (Vocational Competency Achievement Tracking System), which will assess the skills learned in this course throughout the semester.
COURSE OBJECTIVES/COMPETENCIES:
Each student will be pretested during the first two weeks of school on each module. After each module students will be given a post test.
Module 1

Module 2

Module 3
ESSENTIAL STANDARDApply the touch method in operating the keyboard while increasing speed and accuracy.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONSWhat are the correct methods for calculating GWAM while increasing speed and accuracy with using correct keyboarding techniques?
Module 4
ESSENTIAL STANDARDUnderstand formatting skills.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONSWhy is formatting applied to fonts, paragraphs, and pages?What are appropriate formatting guidelines for business letter and memos and why is formatting important? Which business document is the most appropriate means of communication in a given business situation and why?
Module 5
ESSENTIAL STANDARDUnderstand advanced documents.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
The course requirements consist of:
1 – Folder for your portfolio(Teacher will provide this folder)
1 –Please bring a notebook or folder/paper for taking notes
2 – No.2 pencils (To have in class at ALL TIMES!!)
EVALUATION CRITERIA:
Grades will be based on: Grading Scale
Technique (Timed Drills/Writing) 10%93 – 100 = A
Homework 10%85 - 92 = B
Bell Assignment 5%77 - 84 = C
Class Participation 20%69 - 76 = D
Class Assignments 25%below 69 = F
Tests/Quizzes/Notebooks 30%
