COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION SPECIALIST JOB DESCRIPTION
Federal Work Study Eligibility Preferred
$12.50 per hour for first year students, $13.00 Per Hour for returning students
5-10 hours per week
Function:
The Dornsife Center for Community Engagement seeks students interested in supporting youth and community engagement with computer science (CS). We offer part-time positions, designed to enhance educational opportunities for youth (K-12) and for non-profit staff and volunteers primarily located in the West Central neighborhood.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position supports one non-profit agency in the West Central neighborhood of Spokane by offering educational programming in CS, as well as safe recreational and mentoring experiences, to youth. Preference will be given to candidates who have participated in previous summer training sessions about effective pedagogy for creating quality, CS-oriented recreational and learning activities. The position will serve up to 10 hours weekly at a local organization focused on education and youth development. It is the intern’s job to provide quality CS-focused learning experiences for youth groups of different ages and backgrounds, in accordance with the mission, programming and placement needs of the agency. For the 2018-2019 academic year, the position will support Spark Central.
Related Duties:
- Must attend all fall leadership trainings
- Enroll in and attend the weekly GE330 leadership training
- Attend regular team meetings and 1-on-1 meetings with the Program Coordinator
- Support the planning and operations of office events including: Community Building Day
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:
- Federal work study eligible preferred
- Must have a desire to develop leadership skills and grow personally and professionally
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task with several projects
- Ability to work individually and as an active member of a team
Time Expectations:
- 3 Office hours per week (minimum)
- 1 hour per week – GE330 (Cannot be claimed on timecard as academic credit is given for the course)
- 1 hour per month – 1-on-1 with Program Coordinator for Student-Leadership
- 2 hours per month attending a WU Club meeting of your choice, or working with an identified AS-L faculty member
- Additional hours may be required to complete identified program and AS-L Experience design
Professional Expectations:
- If you use your phone for professional communication, set up a personal voicemail that is professional and clear
- Create an email signature
- Use and share your Outlook calendar with the PCs, even if it only includes your class schedule and known recurring appointments/meetings/events
- Uphold standard of professional attire and conduct at Community Partner meetings and meeting with faculty
- Maintain a professional image on social media sites (i.e., no pictures of illegal activity)
- Timely communication with supervisors and managers
