Prerequisite:

The basic skills of listening, reading, writing, speaking, and computation, organizing, following instructions, problem solving and critical thinking are required and used daily.

Course Description:

This competency-based course provides students with technical instruction and practical experience in the integrated applications of several computer programs. It includes an introduction, reviews of workplace safety and employability skills, and keyboarding reinforcement. Emphasis is placed on the integrated applications such as word processing, electronic spreadsheets, presentation software, introduction to database management, mail merging, and scanning. Several aspects of the World Wide Web are also covered. The competencies in this course are aligned with the California High School Academic Content Standards and the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards.

Competency Areas:

·  Introduction – Students will understand course content, skills required, classroom safety procedures, computer usage in today’s global society, and types of entry level jobs available.

·  Speed and accuracy reinforcement –Understand, apply, and evaluate the keyboarding reinforcement techniques to improve keyboard speed and accuracy. Students will use timed drills and writings to improve keyboard speed and accuracy.

·  Integrated Programs - Understand, apply, and evaluate the integrated application techniques for word processing, electronic spreadsheets, presentation software, database, mail merging, scanning.

·  Program Upgrades - Understand, apply, and evaluate the techniques for upgrading programs.

·  World Wide Web - Understand, apply, and evaluate the functions of the World Wide Web.

·  Troubleshooting - Understand, apply, and evaluate troubleshooting techniques for program integration and importing of files.

·  Employability Skills Review - Review, apply, and evaluate the employability skills required for office computer operator.

·  Terminology – Students will understand basic computer terminology.

Attendance

Students must be in their assigned seat when the tardy bell rings. This is a skill course and it takes practice to master the computer skills and techniques. Too many absences will set the student back and it is hard to catch-up with assignments.

Make- up Assignments and Tests

All assignments must be completed in class. Theory and Production tests will be given regularly. If you miss an assignment or test due to an absence, it is your responsibility to ask the teacher what you are missing. Makeup assignments and tests will only be issued if absence is an excused absence.

Report Cards

This is a 1 semester (20 week) class. Grades will be issued as follows: 5 Week Progress Report, 10 Week Midterm Report Card, 15 Week Progress Report and a 20 Week Final Report Card.

Student Behavior

Excessive talking and disrupting class will not be allowed. Students are expected to maintain adequate behavior and to follow class rules. While on campus, all class and school rules apply.

Substitute Teacher

There will be times when I’ll be absent due to illness or an emergency. A substitute teacher will be assigned to this class. It is important that you show respect to all substitute teachers. They are in charge and will notify me of students who misbehave. If you have any problems or questions, direct them immediately to the substitute teacher.

Teacher: Mr. Castillo CLASSROOM RULES

@  Students must be in class when the tardy bell rings.

@  Do not bring food, drinks, candy, or gum to class (water bottles with cap OK)

@  Do not use personal software (CD’s, flash drives, etc.) on the computers. The school is not responsible for damaged items.

@  Do not download any programs or games into the computers. Doing this will be cause for disciplinary action.

@  Do not detach hardware items (for example, mouse, keyboard, etc.) Do not attempt to repair computers.

@  Excessive talking or interrupting is not allowed in class.

@  My classroom is not a restroom. There is to be NO GROOMING at any of the stations. This includes combing/brushing hair or putting on any make-up.

@  Out of courtesy to me, others, and yourself, do not use inappropriate language, verbal or written in my classroom. I consider this very unprofessional and rude.

@  Do not damage, write on equipment, or desks. Disciplinary actions may include expulsion from school.

Bring notebook and supplies to class daily. (Art/Graffiti: No “black books” are allowed, they will be confiscated)

@  Texting during class time is prohibited. Do not bring CD players, iPods, cell phones, cameras, etc. to class otherwise they will be confiscated and your parents will need to pick them up. (I will give you one warning).

@  Show respect to teachers, students, guests, and yourself. Remember, if you want respect, you have to give it first.

@  Take notes during lectures. These will help you review for future tests.

@  There is no sleeping in class.

@  Late or make-up homework, assignments or missed tests are subject to approval from teacher.

@  Do not bring the following to class: Bandanas, caps, hair nets, baggie pants, gang paraphernalia, sandals, clothing that may be offensive to others, weapons, sharp objects, laser pointers, and other items as mentioned in the school rules.

@  Ask the teacher for help if you do not understand something.

@  Cheating on tests and assignments will be cause for loss of points and disciplinary action.

@  Do not get up and wait by the door for the bell. Stay in your seat until the bell rings.
