Computer Lab Fee: $10.00 (The $60.00 Instructional Fund money that is required of all students is used to financially support the academic classes only. This class is a technical class and receives NONE of the $60.00 Instructional Fund money.)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to develop computer technology skills. Students will use a variety of computer software and hardware tools. Students will develop skills that will assist them with efficient production, accurate production analysis, management and information, and design and presentation of a multimedia project. This course requires each student to use keyboarding, word processing, database, spreadsheets, and presentation software. Our efforts in this class will focus on in-depth mastery of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
COURSE CONTENT
Glencoe Keyboarding with Computer Applications by Johnson, Chiri, Cotton, and Stanley
Unit 1 – Introduction to Computers
· Review Alphabetic Keyboard, Basic Punctuation Marks, Numeric keys
· Guidelines for safe use of computer and elements of good digital citizenship
Unit 2 – Microsoft Word
· Creating, formatting, and editing a Word documents with pictures
· Production of business letters with letterhead and embedded tables
· Creating a research paper with citations and references
Unit 3 – Microsoft Excel
· Spreadsheet production with embedded charts, tables, and graphs
· Mastery of formulas, functions, and formatting in the spreadsheet
· Using analysis, charting, and working within large worksheets
Unit 4 – Microsoft PowerPoint
· Production of professional presentations
· Creating and editing a presentation with ClipArt
· Enhancing presentations with pictures, shapes, and WordArt
Unit 5 – Capstone Project – Application of concepts and skills learned throughout the course in creating solutions to real-life business scenarios using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
GRADING AND ATTENDANCE
50% - Projects/Test Completion
35% - Daily classroom assignments
15% - Class Participation
**Final Exam – A final exam will be given in the class and will count as 25% of the overall grade for the semester.
*Since this is a lab-based class, all work is done inside the classroom—not as homework. Therefore, attendance is extremely important in order to stay current with the work load of the class.
COMPUTER LAB POLICIES
· Arrive to class on time and excited about the activities of the day.
· Abide by all lab safety rules—no running in lab or spinning/rolling in chairs.
· Respect your teacher and classmates; respect all classroom equipment and materials.
· Be thoughtful of others in actions and voice level/tone.
· Do not bring food or drink into the lab.
· Follow guidelines for printing and only print when given permission to do so.
· Be proud of your own work; never use the work of another student.
· Cell phones should not be used in class. Keep them stored in your backpack to avoid the temptation!
· Any cheating or plagiarism will be dealt with severely. At the teacher’s discretion, you may be given an F for the test or assignment where cheating occurred.
· NO Chat Rooms, social media, e-mail, IM, etc. while in the lab
· All sites and language must be school appropriate
· Log out and push in chairs at end of class
· Do not change any settings on the computer—including, but not limited to: Desktop Background, Sounds, Mouse Settings, Screen Saver, Icon Position, Internet Home Page, Favorites/Bookmarks, etc.
· Do not access any files but your own.
· Use correct keyboarding technique.
Please do your part to take care of the computers in the lab. Your assigned computer station is your responsibility while you are enrolled in this class.
