Components of Macro-EnvironmentName

HED B2 Describe the components of the macro-environment to include quality of life, neighborhood and community

HED E1 Demonstrate effective verbal, nonverbal, written and electronic communication skills

Scenario

There are many aspects of your environment. One of those is quality of life which is the degree of satisfaction obtained from life. Other aspects are the neighborhood, the groups of houses around you and the community, the larger area that surrounds you neighborhood. Think about all the ways that housing can be affected by these. For instance, what if a shopping center were to move into your community? Would there be positive consequences? Would there be negative consequences? What if a new four lane highway came through your neighborhood? How would it affect you? Would your quality of life improve or deteriorate?

Activity

Analyze your macro-environment, your surroundings in terms of quality of life, neighborhood and community.

How does your housing contribute to your quality of life? Does it meet your needs and personal priorities? Does it make you feel satisfied? Why? Does it meet the needs and personal priorities of other members of your household? What important items and experiences in you life mean quality of life to you? What things will you want in your home in the future that will give you quality of life?

Describe your physical neighborhood. Do you live in a group of homes or off by yourself? Are their businesses in your neighborhood? What types of people live in your neighborhood? Are they families with young children? Elderly? Is it heterogeneous or homogeneous? Are the types of homes similar? How would you feel about living in a subdivision like that described in Housing Decisions page 94?

What type of community do you live in, city, small town, or rural? Would you prefer to live in a different type of community than you do? What are the advantages to living in this type of community? Disadvantages? What services (stores, schools, churches, medical facilities, fire and police protection, recreational facilities, jobs) are offered in this community? What services could be added to improve your community? Describe the climate of our area. What type of climate would you prefer to live in? Would your housing options change if you lived in your preferred climate?

Your response should be written in complete sentences and paragraphs and address all aspects of the three components. Your response should be typed or neatly handwritten in dark ink on unlined paper and contain a minimum of three paragraphs.
