1. Nature of the proposal: / to validate a new module / to make a significant amendment to the assessment of an existing module, withdrawal or addition of different assessment types, e.g. replacing 100% exam with 50% coursework and 50% exam;
to make any other amendment.
2. Module code / click here and type
3. Module title / click here and type
4. Student numbers: / 1st year of operation / 2nd year of operation / 3rd year of operation
click here and type / click here and type / click here and type
Provide a realistic estimate of new enrolments during the first three years of operation. Note that minimum thresholds apply as follows: Level 4 (20); Level 5 (10); Level 6 (6); Level 7 (6).
5. Rationale for the proposal to introduce a new module or amend an existing one
a) What are the rationale and aims of the proposal in the context of existing and proposed programmes? Refer to evidence such as student feedback, External Examiners’ reports and external benchmarks as appropriate.
Allows for careers-focused Placements module to exist alongside other departmental modules, allowing for freedom of placement type (e.g. a placement in a PR firm can make sense in the
broader context of an English Degree, but not as a work based learning activity solely in the context of a Shakespeare module).
What are the implications for the curriculum in terms of student choice, pathways in existing programmes and the range of subjects on offer?
As the module is not credit bearing it has no impact on choice of academic pathways in existing programmes. It does however allow the students to participate in careers education
including reflection on a work placement in meaningful ways as an enhancement of their degree programme.
For new module proposals, is it intended that the proposed module should replace any existing modules? If you are withdrawing modules, please list these below.
It does not replace existing modules.
b) For module amendments, summarise briefly the proposed change in reference to the module specification.
No moduleamendments.
6. Likely impact of the proposal
a) What additional learning resources (library, computing and web-based materials), specialist equipment and/or teaching space will be required, and how are these to be provided from existing departmental allocations?
Very limited impact as Careers & Employability provide the majority of content. There is a pre-module requirement of attendance at 2 workshops delivered byCareers & Employability
for which lecture theatre or classroom space may be required.
b) What support on E-learning tools is needed to run this module? Have these and other teaching and learning requirements been discussed with relevant members of the Educational Development team?
Currently none, although Moodle may be used for submission of work.
c) What are the other types of expenditure arising from the proposal (e.g. field trips), and how will these be funded?
None. Preparation for the module includes students undertaking of a short-term (2-4 week) work placement, for which financial help is available through the Student Finance office for
qualifying students. Departments may hold a budget for similar help if they wish.
Please confirm that:
details of any additional resources (print or electronic) have been shared and agreed with the Library and other service providers on campus;
details of the core/ essential reading list materials have been shared and agreed with the Library;
a full reading list for the module will be passed on to the Library once the module has been validated.
7. Collaborative arrangements including validated programmes offered with others, franchised programmes, work placements, study abroad, work-based learning)
a) Provide names and contact information for any organisations outside Royal Holloway which would be involved in the organisation, delivery or assessment of the module.
The module is run in collaboration with Careers & Employability at Royal Holloway who provide compulsory preparatory workshops, and run a competitive selection process. Required preparatory work for the module includes the undertaking of a short term (2-4 week) work placement. Several organisations may host the placements, but all are / will be vetted and risk assessed by Careers & Employability, including signed agreement letters. This does not represent work based learning as such, but rather is intended to supply some experience of the work environment. The educational element is self-reflection on the part of the student via guidance from the Careers & Employability (the former providing assessment for the module).
b) Describe the nature and extent (as a percentage of the programme) of each partner’s intended involvement.
0% of module, although they do have 2-4 weeks involvement by hosting a work placement required as prep work.
c) Provide a brief rationale for the proposed collaboration, which should take into account each partner’s size, sphere of influence, range of activities, standing among professionals in the field and existing links with Royal Holloway and other bodies.
To provide a short term work placement as an exposure to a relevant occupational area, allowing for careers education through self-reflection. Size of placement hosts vary, as does sphere of influence or existing links to Royal Holloway. More important is the fit with student aspirations, although all opportunities are vetted by Careers & Employability with approved Health and Safety measures in place.
Modules which are offered in collaboration with other organisations/ institutions are subject to additional scrutiny during validation and are regulated by institutional contracts. No
department or individual may enter into a formal understanding or agreement with an external partner in regard to an accredited module without the prior approval of the Collaborative
Provisions Committee.
