COMPETITION – GENERAL RULES - 2014

1.  Entrants are to classify themselves according to skill and experience, using classifications as guidelines. If you have never entered the show before, place yourself where you feel comfortable. Please note that chairman or judges may move an artist to a more appropriate level at their discretion.

2.  Pieces that have been awarded a prize in a previous INRA rosemaling competition are not acceptable.

3.  A person can stay in a category as long as he/she wishes, or until he/she takes first place in that category. The artist then must advance to the next higher category, exception - Golden Agers.

4.  All brushwork must be by the artist; no brushwork by an instructor. In the original design categories, there should be no design help from instructors or other painters.

5.  Entries will be judged on basis of technique, design/composition, color, and quality of the item painted/finish. Judges’ decisions are final.

6.  The “Best of Show” will only be awarded to a piece with an original pattern.

7.  Entries must be painted on wood with 8” or more of a rosemaling design.

8.  Entrants should not sign or initial the visible side of the piece; if signature is on reverse side, entrant must cover signature.

9.  Submit a Competition Form and Entry Fee(s). Three pieces may be entered in competition.

10.  The competition identification label, corresponding to the competition registration form, must be completed and affixed to the back of each competition entry piece. AVOID SCOTCH TAPE AS IT MAY REMOVE FINISH!

11.  Drop-off and check-in will be at the Community House @ Good Templar Park on Tuesday, June 17, from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Shipped items should be sent to Bev Gunderson by June 14.

12.  All entries must be properly packaged. Neither the Illinois Norsk Rosemalers, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, nor Good Templar Park will be responsible for loss or damage.

13.  No entry fee will be refunded.

14.  No entry may be picked up before 5:00 p.m. Sunday, at the close of the show.

15.  Critiques may be picked up at any time during the show from the cashier table.

16.  Persons selling rosemaling items at any Swedish Days event other than the INRA show are not eligible for competition.

17.  All members (except Gold Medalists) entering show are encouraged to work a minimum of 4 hours (a morning or afternoon) of the show, not including Tuesday set up. Check with Show Chairmen or Committee Chairmen about scheduling time. Percentage fees retained by INRA will depend on whether the artist works or not. (see commission)

AWARDS: Ribbons will be awarded at the Judges’ discretion. First, Second, and Third place ribbons receive cash awards. Honorable Mention and Peoples Choice receives a ribbon only. One Best of Show ribbon is presented, along with a cash award.

COMMISSION: 20% of the sale price on both competition and sale items will be retained by INRA for those that work at the show. 25% of the sale price on both competition and sales items will be retained for those that do not work show, with exception of Gold Medalist, theirs will remain 20%.

NON-COMPETITION SALES: Only competitors may sell additional quality pieces at the show. There must be a minimum of one “for sale” item per each competition item. (To meet this minimum, the competition piece may also be the “for sale” item). All items must be readily identifiable as traditional or as having evolved from traditional Norwegian Rosemaling. The Show Committee reserves the right to review all items for show suitability.

Registration and use of the proper “for sale” item identification labels, and corresponding “for sale” registration forms is mandatory. There is no registration fee for non-competition items. Return postage fees will be deducted from the artist’s total sales. Artists must understand that space is limited. INRA will display as many items as possible at one time.
