Position Title: Speech and Language Pathologist

Purpose of Position:

The Speech-Language Pathologist offers a range of speech and language services to infants and children with a physical and /or documented delay/ disability. The speech-language pathologist functions as a member of a multidisciplinary team. They offer services such as: assessment, direct intervention and consultation to families and other caregivers at OCTC service delivery sites, the home environment and/or childcare settings. As well, the speech-language pathologist is involved in educational, community based or research activities.

Promotes quality improvement in all endeavours and supports safety initiatives, to minimize risk and strive for optimal organizational performance and safety benefiting staff, clients, their families, volunteers, visitors and the community.

Works in compliance with the law and with safe workpractices and policies established by OCTC to maintain a safe work environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides assessment of communication skills and oral motor function of physically and/ or developmentally handicapped preschool-aged children referred to Early Childhood Program for speech and language services.
  • Provides intervention in the form of direct therapy (group or individual), consultation, monitoring, and/or written programs to facilitate the development of communication skills.
  • Conducts courses and training workshops for families and caregivers.
  • Organizes resources and develops augmentative communication equipment.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings and parent conferences.
  • Provides services, at OCTC sites, the home environment and/or childcare settings in accordance with the mandate, and delivery standards and practices of the Program.
  • Liaises with the family, community workers and the other members of the multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Documents assessments, progress notes and discharge summaries as per College guidelines.
  • Makes appropriate recommendations for referrals to other clinic and/or services in the hospital and to relevant community agencies.
  • Provides presentations on various topics of communication and oral motor development to professionals and/or community members.
  • Participates in clinical teaching and supervision of student interns from accredited speech and language pathology programs.
  • Participates in staff development and research when appropriate.
  • Participates in professional development activities.
  • Participates in other activities as assigned by Program Administrator or Clinical Coordinator.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with organizational polices and procedures related to privacy.
  • Follows organizational policies and procedures related to safety, including

reporting and follow-up for incidents/accidents and near misses, identification and management of risks and emergency procedures.

  • Follows routine precautions for infection prevention and control including proper

hand hygiene.

  • Participates in education and improvement activities related to safety.
  • Follows standards of practice for the profession regarding safe application of assessment protocols, therapeutic techniques and techniques for direct handling of clients.
  • Receives training in safe and effective use of equipment, ensures that any equipment used with client is clean and in proper working order; reports any equipment in need of maintenance or repair.
  • Educates clients and their families and helps them understand their role in promoting safety.
  • Receives training and maintains current knowledge of CPR and First Aid in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited university.
  • Member of the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario.
  • Eligible for registration with CASLPA.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Minimum two (2) years recent/related working with children with developmental handicaps and/or speech and language disorders preferred.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in working within other programs and ability to adapt to a changing caseload and venues for service delivery.
  • Interpersonal and organizational skills essential.
  • Computer skills are an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team setting.

Other:

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • Police Record Check for the vulnerable sector.

Language:

  • Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset.

Relationship and Responsibility:

Reports to: Program Administrator Early Childhood Program and the Clinical

Coordinator.

Supervision Received: As required

Contacts:

Inside: All Centre staff.

Outside: Clients, families, staff from other professional programs, hospitals, community program/services.

Hours of Work: 30 hours per week as scheduled by OCTC. Flexible work hours including evenings and weekends may be required.

Work Environment: Involves risk management related to community based work

environment.Lifting clients and equipment. Potential for exposure to communicable

diseases.
