SoBran is seeking aTrainerto serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

OVERVIEW: Responsible for all activities required for ABSL2/3 training and government clearance of NIAID Division of Intramural Research animal care personnel. Perform as an effective role model for meeting the biosafety standards in regards to behavior and conduct for performing procedures and working in a biocontainment environment.

Description of Duties:

  1. Provide training to the NIAID/CMB staff working in the ABSL3 Suites (Building 50 and 33)
  2. Provide training to the NIAID/CMB staff working in all areas of the Building 33 vivarium
  3. Conduct new hire orientation for newly hired employees
  4. Conduct training for employees who are newly hired, have changed job description, have transferred from other facilities, and provide special training to correct deficiencies
  5. Conduct employee assessments to determine appropriate knowledge base to meet the performance criteria of their position
  6. Conduct training for employees who are new to the ABSL3 environment
  7. Develop a thorough understanding of all regulations regarding the use of Select Agents
  8. Work in each area of the NIAID animal facilities and become knowledgeable about all technical aspects of the work and keep abreast of changes in technical requirements
  9. Develop a thorough understanding and provide insight to all NIAID Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) with an emphasis on ABSL3. Keep abreast of changes to SOP’s.
  10. Work with Facility Management to identify and prioritize topics for ABSL2/3 training
  11. Prepare lesson plans and develop new training topics for each NIAID ABSL2/3 position
  12. Provide training to NIAID CMB investigators and researchers working in the ABSL3 suites
  13. Ensure that each employee is trained in the current SOP’s required of their position for working in the ABSL3 suites
  14. Provide retraining for individual employees when needed
  15. Assist with and provide reports for quality assurance animal facility walk-throughs as requested
  16. Oversee and assist in the editing of orientations, handbooks, flow charts, etc. relating the ABSL3 suites
  17. Conduct ABLS3 orientations to include classroom and hands on training
  18. Assist employees with completing security clearances and NIH/NIAID mandated training courses
  19. Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff
  20. Perform and assist other trainers with lunchtime AALAS classes at the ALAT and LAT levels. Promote AALAS certification.
  21. Provide and perform other training or duties as requested.

Education Required:B.S. Degree or equivalent preferred and must be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), must be currently eligible for the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification and become certified within 10 months of obtaining the position.

Experience Required:Three years working experience in laboratory animal care facilities. Facilities management, animal biosafety level 3 to include select agents, and data management preferred. Must be able to complete an intensive background investigation through the National Agency Check and Inquiries (ANACI) and pass a security risk assessment through the FBI and Criminal Justice Information Services Division. Must complete the required training and receive clearance on the duties of NIAID Animal Biosafety Level 3 Trainer as outlined.
