Companion Book Content Checklist for The Giver

Check off the possible chapter ideas you decide to use. Partners must choose four chapters in addition to Fan Fiction for each. Individuals must choose two chapters plus Fan Fiction. All must have an introduction and conclusion.

___Introduction AND Conclusion: (Must have). Set up the story briefly, explain the contents of companion book and wrap it up in conclusion. Look at mentor texts for help!

___Fan fiction (must have) Write about your story through a different lens. Show the character(s) in a different setting or experience that could possibly happen to them.

___Comparing Characters: Analyze the protagonist and the antagonist (main characters), walk the reader through specific situations, and explain how each views them (situations).

___Focusing on Craft: Analyze how the author develops the story, characters (protagonist and antagonist), or the setting through flashbacks, foreshadowing, dialogue, repetition, description and why they might have developed the story in this way.

___Focusing on Euphemisms: Analyze how the author’s use of Euphemisms contributes to the tone or mood of the novel.

·  Tone is the author’s attitude toward the writing (his characters, the situation) and the readers. A work of writing can have more than one tone. An example of tone could be both serious and humorous. Tone is set by the setting, choice of vocabulary and other details. **

·  Mood is the general atmosphere created by the author’s words. It is the feeling the reader gets from reading those words. It may be the same, or it may change from situation to situation.**

___Focusing on Allusions: Analyze the impact of the biblical allusions Lois Lowry uses. Do they help you understand character relationships, plot or theme?

___ Focusing on Symbolism. Are there any significant symbols that affect the story? Does this thing keep appearing? Are any of the characters symbols themselves? Analyze the use of your favorite Symbols in the novel, The Giver. What do they represent? Do they change throughout the story?

___Focusing on Theme. Write about the message of the Giver and how the author shows this message throughout the novel. What can it help us understand about the world? ***

___Focusing on Comparing The Giver to other dystopias: Analyze a few similarities or differences between The Giver and another dystopian novel or short story.

__Other topics: Is there a topic that emerges in The Giver that you need to write about? What is it? Rituals? Ceremonies? The Speaker?

___Table of Contents: Include and organized list of chapters with interesting chapter headings

___Cover: Include a cover that entices a reader to read your companion book!

***Theme:

The theme in a story is its underlying message, or 'big idea.' In other words, what important belief about life is the author trying to show in the writing of a novel, play, short story or poem? This belief, or idea, is usually universal (does not just apply to the story) and it touches on the human experience, regardless of race or language. It is what the story means. Often, a piece of writing will have more than one theme.

You can go as far above and beyond as you would like if you finish early. Any additional, well-written chapters you add will earn extra points.
