Community Support Worker - Job Description

Salary : Full time contract – 36 hours per week

£17,128.80 basic per annum (after probation)

Mon – Fri work £9.15 per hour

(£8.15 per hour during initial 6 month probation)

Enhancements for weekend and bank holiday work

Sleep-in allowance £33.50

Holiday :5 weeks (pro rata for part time worker)

Our service users have a wide range of abilities and the level of support offered will depend on the needs of the individual.

Main Duties

To provide, as part of a team, an individually tailored support service to enable our service users to live in their own homes and to help meet their personal and social needs in the community

To provide personal care and support where necessary, at all times ensuring the maximum respect for the individual’s rights and personal dignity

To ensure that the policies and procedures of the Lambeth Mencap Community Support Service are carried out effectively and sensitively paying particular attention to Safeguarding and Capacity.

To ensure that all communication with service users is via their chosen method.

Care and Support Duties

All duties to be undertaken in line with the service users individual support plan and service delivery plan.

Help service users to develop new skills and maintain existing ones in independent living.

Assist service users in making claims for benefits, grants and rebates or in negotiating and making debt repayments

Support service users in managing their money.

Support service users with correspondence. Ensuring they understand the correspondence, helping them with any responses needed and where necessary writing these responses for them.

Give practical help with personal care and give personal care where necessary. This may involve moving and handling where a service user has a physical disability.

Help service users to identify, select and plan their activities and accompany them on activities where necessary.

Encourage service users to adopt a healthy life style and access appropriate health advice and support

Enable and support service users to make social contacts within and beyond the learning disability community as they choose and accompany them as necessary.

Support and cook with service users ensuring health and safety rules are followed and cook for service users where necessary.

Help service users to maintain their living environment in the way they have chosen.

Support service users with appointments with health practitioners and accompany them when needed.

Support service users with their medication, administer it where necessary and keep accurate records.

Handle petty cash where necessary and safeguard money for service users, keeping full and accurate records.

Keep full and accurate records of support provided, including handovers while maintaining confidentiality

Support service users to keep their homes secure and safe.

Other Duties

Carry out employee health and safety requirements.

Be available for sleep-in duties.

To travel around London in supporting service users and be prepared to travel further if service users activity requires you to do so.

Accompany service users on holiday where necessary.

To be available for work on Saturday, Sunday and bank Holidays on a rota basis

To be flexible in covering emergencies, holiday and sick leave.

To comply with and implement Lambeth Mencap’s Equality and Diversity policy and other operational policies and procedures.

Attend training courses as instructed

Attend supervision and staff meetings and any other meetings when required

Complete and return monthly time sheets by the 5th day of the month

Carry out other tasks as requested by the line manager within the organisation’s aims and responsibilities

3.Other Requirements

3.1A willingness to undertake all aspects of support work including personal care and physical mobility support.

3.3A Level II or III Certificate or Diploma in Health and Social Care or a willingness to study towards obtaining the qualification.
