Community restoration fund application guidelines
What is this fund?
This fund is to support people restoring, maintaining or enhancing native vegetation of streams, wetlands and forested areas within the Wairarapa Moana project boundary(see map). This is because restoring native plants can improve habitat values (homes for native creatures) and stabilise the soil, so that it doesn’t wash into the streams and lakes of Wairarapa Moana.
In particular we want to help people to:
- Improve the health of the native ecosystems (plant and animal systems) around the Wairarapa Moana area
- Reduce the amount of sediment (soil) getting into streams and the harbour
- Involve others in their restoration work
- Spread the message that native ecosystems are really important and that Wairarapa Moana has one of the most important native ecosystems in the Wellington Region
Who can apply?
This fund is for volunteer groupswho want to do a project to help restore native plants to an area within the Wairarapa Moana project boundary. Applicants need to be a functioning group with a nominated leader. Check out the map to see if your project area is in the catchment.
This fund is only available for work on public land. You can ring your local council to find out if your project area is on public land.
Howcan this funding be used?
The fund is available to help with the following costs:
- Native plants
- Materialsto grow your own native plants
- Pest plant and animal control
- Tools and refreshments for working bees
We can help with advice about the best plant species for your site, and where to buy the right plants. Our Biosecurity department have experts who can provide great advice about how to control pest plants and animals to ensure your native plants survive and thrive.
