Setting an example to followverses 6-7

• As imitators of Paul, Silas, and ultimately the Lord Jesus

 To do what someone else does

 1 Corinthians 11:1
Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.

• In spite of persecution

– This was not just being made fun of for being a Christian

– See Acts 16:22-24 & Acts 17:1-10

• Overflowing in joy

– The joy of a relationship with God

– The joy of an inheritance

– The joy of relationship in community

• To the larger community

– The faith of the Thessalonians was known over the entire province (Macedonia) and to the surrounding province (Achaia)

Spreading the Gospel beyond the communityverse 8

• Grounded in God’s Word

– Not merely a tacit acknowledgement that God exists, but in the glorious God who sent His Son to die and pay for the sins of all who will believe in Him

– “We have no need to say anything”

– The solid faith of the believers was testified to in consistency of faith

Leading in repentanceverse 9

• Being a testimony to change

– Not merely personal witness

– Others could see of their obvious faith in Jesus Christ and spread the news

• Turning from idolatry

– An idol is anything we put ahead of God, not just a wood, brass, or stone object

• Resulting in serving God

– Repentance is not just turning away from sin

– It also is a turning to living for and serving the One true God

Waiting for Christ’s returnverse 10

• Expecting it at any time

• Assured of His promise through resurrection

• To be delivered from God’s wrath

– During the Great Tribulation (see Revelation 6:16, 11:18, 14:10, 14:19, 15:1, 15:7, 16:1, 16:19, 19:15)

– From Hell which is God’s wrath in eternal and conscious punishment
