Affordable and Accessible Sailing & Boating in Rhode Island

In communities across the country, non-profit, public access sailing and boating programs are making learning to sail and recreational boating affordable and accessible to ordinary folks.

Several years ago, it struck a group of local sailors that the people of Rhode Island should have access to a community boating program. Organized and implemented entirely by volunteers, this visionary plan was set into action. The Community Boating Center (CBC) at Providence's India Point Park opened in June 1994 with a small fleet of boats, a few docks and a boat storage shed built largely with donated materials and volunteer labor.

Today, our new boathouse, 60+ fleet of boats, and dedicated membership, positions CBC as an integral component to the success and growth of Providence's waterfront revival. Founded as a non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization, CBC offers a variety of opportunities that allow the general public to experience the thrill of sailing and boating in upper Narragansett Bay.

Community Outreach

Last year, over 600 children, targeted by CBC efforts, experienced our outreach programs. These children were primarily recruited through liaisons with structured organizations in the greater Providence area. Boys and girls from different cultures and backgrounds work together, learning tolerance, trust and respect for one another. Most importantly, these kids can continue to enjoy the sport because CBC makes it accessible and affordable.

Sailing Lessons

CBC offers a variety of youth and adult sailing lessons that allow our members to experience the thrill and challenge of sailing in upper Narragansett Bay. “Sailorships” are also available for classes for youth students who meet eligibility requirements. Affordable CBC memberships allow individuals and groups to enroll in our structured lessons including FREE access to our boats for adults to continue to enjoy sailing as a lifetime recreational activity upon lesson completion.

Affordable Access

CBC also offers affordable access for experienced adult sailors who do not wish to take lessons. Qualified members may sail during open sailing hours subject to weather/ equipment availability. CBC also provides affordable access and fleet rentals to local schools and organizations. Additionally, CBC offers waterfront function room rental for meetings, parties, or special events.

Youth Sailing Memberships/ Skill Level Evaluation 4

Sailing in Providence!

Rhode Island's greatest natural resource is Narragansett Bay. For generations it has been regarded as one of the best sailing grounds in the world, attracting racers and cruisers from around the globe. Unfortunately, most Rhode Islanders of average means have only been able to enjoy the bay from ashore. The Community Boating Center in Providence is changing all that. It makes good sense for the Ocean State to have a program that makes sailing accessible and affordable to all while encouraging environmentally appropriate use of the upper bay. It makes good sense for the Community Boating Center to continue Rhode Island's rich seafaring tradition by helping restore Providence's waterfront to the center of activity it once was. It makes great sense to ensure children are foremost in our plans.

CBC parent: “Everyone was wonderful. (My child) grew a lot, was challenged and accepted. Instructors were very nice and helpful.”

Why Sailing?

Non-sailors may ask, "why sailing?" when Providence already has organizations that offer a variety of youth sports and recreational programs. There are few (if any) activities that teach so many important virtues and lessons about life the way sailing does: cause and effect, problem solving, science and technology, teamwork, and much more.
