4. Objectives set for the year:
- Identifying newer children
- Professional interventions to be provided at the Centre ( like the services of Physiotherapist, Low Vision Consultant, Speech Therapist, etc..)
- To continue with the home based interventions for needy children
- Renew and apply for the disability certificates for the children already in the program and for new children inducted into the program
- To strengthen the parents group and their involvement.
- To strengthen the interventions of Professional Services by networking with leading hospitals in the city and forming a multidisciplinary approach to the education of these children.
- To provide Assistive Devices to the needy children.
- Preparation of Individual Education Plan for the new children and teaching aids
- Outings /Picnics for the parents and children of the project
- Visits to the homes of the children by the Programme Manager
5. Objectives taken up during the reporting period
On 19th to 21st January 2010, Mr. Vinod Banusali, Programme Co-ordinator of NAB – India, Mumbai visited the NAB – Kerala. He made home visits to all the cases. His visit was very useful to the educators. He also trained the educators to make some assistive devices using low cost materials.
On January 28th 2010, NAB Kerala jointly with Sense International India Organised a State Level Advocacy Workshop on Deafblindness at YMCA, Trivandrum. The Chief Gguest was Dr. Rani Nair, State Disability Commissioner, Govt of Kerala. 40 members representing various institutions in Kerala participated in the Workshop. A memorandum high lighting the needs and rights of Deafblind population was prepared for submission before Government. Please visit the link for the pictures of these event

7. Family Development Meetings
On November 23rd 2009 a Family Development Meeting was held for VIMD (Visual Impairment and Multiple Disability) Project at Ernakulam. Almost all the families were presented in the meeting. Successful cases undertaken by Db & MD Project, Trivandrum, were explained in detail, so as to motivate the Parents and to make them aware of their role in assisting and supporting the children.
All units of NAB – Kerala observed International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December – 3rd by conducting seminars, rallies and awareness programmes.
On December 5th, a Family Development Meeting of the families of the project for the children with multiple disabilities was held at NAB Office, Trivandrum. Discussions were held to celebrate the 10th anniversary (Decade) of services of CMD project.
January 26th was an important day for our institution. The completion of ‘a decade’ of our Deafblind & Multiple Disabiliteis Project was celebrated. All the Children came along with their parents and siblings. Mr. Jaya Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Govt.of Kerala inaugurated the function. The event was celebrated with the active participation of parents and children. Parents shared experiences with the Project. Gifts were presented to all children. 8. Interventions provided during this quarter
- Conducted family meetings, and celebrations.
- Conducted the assessments (Vision & hearing)
- Interacted with different NGO’s
- Sensitised the parents
- Support given to the CBR Staffs in VIMD Project Ernakulam.
9. Visitors to the program during the quarter
Students of St.ThomasHigherSecondary School, Amboori, Trivandrum, Students from Holy Angel’s Convent, Trivandrum. Visited the centre as part of their Social Service Programme.
Trainees of DSE MR ( Diploma in Special Education Mental Retardation) Nirmala Sadan Institute, Moovattupuzha visited NAB Kerala on 19th January as part of their educational visits to organizations working with disabilities
10. Achievements
- Change in the Attitude (positive) of the Parents
- We could convince the parents and siblings that these children can be bring back to main stream, if suitable training and assistances given.
- Sensitisation on Deafblindness and Multiple Disabilities to15 NGO’s from Kerala, VRC Government of India and National Programme for Rehabilitation of Person with Disabilities through a Workshop organized by us on 28th January 2010.
- Parents accepted that these children also could participant in cultural or arts events like any other children.
