Introduction from the Executive Director

St Mark’s Hospital – Beating Bowel Disease, Saving Lives.

St Mark’s Hospital is the leading specialist hospital in the UK for the treatment of colorectal cancer and other bowel diseases.

Bowel Cancer is the second highest cause of cancer fatality in the UK. The development of new treatments is of extremely high importance, nationally and internationally.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease affects 240,000 people in the UK and, without effective treatment, it is a painfully debilitating and potentially fatal disease.

Everyone connected to St Mark’s: Surgeons, Gastroenterologists, Scientists, Nurses, Administrators, Fundraisers are highly dedicated to ensuring that, one day, bowel disease will be either curable or totally manageable..

Currently, St. Mark’s Hospital provides life saving treatment for more than 50,000 people each year. St. Mark’s Hospital Foundation raises the funds to support the medical research into Bowel Disease that is carried out at St Mark’s Hospital which is based in Harrow, North West London.

St Mark’s Hospital has a world leading reputation for developing newand vastly improved ways of treating people with bowel disease. Currently St Mark’sis researching into exciting new surgical and medical treatment of early colon cancer which, potentially, will havea life changing impact ontens of thousands of patients. This research is part of a larger portfolio of research projects for which St Mark’s Hospital Foundation is currently fundraising.

There has never been a more exciting time to workfor St Mark’s Hospital Foundation. Having raised in excess of £1million per annum for research, the Trustees and Directorship are committed to increasing this to £1.5 million for the 2013-14 fundraising year with further improvements in the future.

The Fundraising Team.

St Mark’s Hospital Foundationis a small, dynamic, and highly supportive team. We pride ourselves on the buzz of activity in the fundraising office and sense of family that exists within our workplace.The team currently consists of An Executive Director, Trusts and Foundations Manager, Community and Events Executive and Fundraising Administrator. The Fundraising Administrator supports all members of the Fundraising Team. The current Community and Events Executive is moving overseas which creates the opportunity for a new team member to build on the successes already achieved

In addition to the Fundraising Team, the Foundation’s staff also includes the St. Mark’sAcademic Institute. The main role of the Institute is to organise medical education courses. The two arms of the Foundation have a close working relationship with the overriding objective to be to support and promote St Mark’s Hospital. We are also supported by anAccounts and Finance Executive and the Foundation’s Accountant. In addition we have approximately 50 volunteers who support fundraising.

Community and Events Fundraising at St. Mark’s Hospital Foundation.

Community and Events Fundraising comprises primarily;-

a). Groups and Individuals

b). Central Events

c). Gala Dinner

e). Volunteer management

d) Direct Mail

Groups and Individuals:- St Mark’s has a number of groups and individuals who mainly run their own fundraising events with varying degrees of support from the Fundraising Team. Support ranges from very little to more intensive support at and near the time of a group or individuals fundraising event, as well as providing reports and feedback for committee meetings. Our largest single fundraising group consists of 33 members who have raised over £300,000 in the past two years for St. Mark’s.

Central Events:- Apart from our annual Foundation Dinner St Marks has only recently started running its owncentral events. In the coming year the Community and Events Executive will run Spirit and Soul of Christmas II, our high energy Carol Concert which attracted over 350 people.

Gala Dinner:- The Foundation has successfully built up its Annual Black Tie Dinner over several years. Last year it attracted 300 guests and generated significant funds. We aim to build on the Dinner this year and to this end we are holding it at a bigger, prestigious venue, on the 23rd October 2014. The Community and Events Fundraising Executive will have a substantial role to play in the Gala Dinner.

N.B Challenge Events:-St Mark’s runs an all year round diary of challenge events which includes running and cycling. These Campaigns are run by the Fundraising Assistant.

Volunteer Management:- St Mark’s encourages volunteers to man our information desk, do bucket collections, help at Events. The Community and Events Fundraising Executive will be responsible for mobilising existing volunteers as well as recruiting new ones.

Direct Mail:- We aim to produce two direct mail appeals each year and one community newsletter. We also aim to run our legacy campaign by direct mail. The Community and Events Fundraising Executive will provide substantial input into the organisation and running of these Direct Mail Appeals.

Engagement Events:-The Foundation plans to run a series of receptions, site visits and briefings to engage our existing donors and recruit new supporters. The Fundraising Executive will lead on organising many of these events.

JOB DESCRIPTION and PERSON SPECIFICATION

Role Title: Community and Events Fundraising Executive

Salary: £25,000 plus Performance Related Bonus

Hours of Work: 09.00am to 05.00pm Monday to Friday with flexibility required to work some evening and weekends. Time off in Lieu will be given.

Place of work: St Mark’s Hospital Foundation, Northwick Park, Watford Road, Harrow, Middlesex, HA1 3UJ.

JOB ROLE

The following are the key roles of this job

a). Ensure St. Mark’s provides an appropriate level of quality support for the groups and individuals who fundraise for us.

b). Take personal responsibility for delivering £124,000 in unrestricted income and £136,00 in restricted income.

c). Work within the cost budgets for Community and Events Fundraising as agreed with the Executive Director.

d). Deliver a successful Central Event and aim to lay the foundations for a second Central Event in 2014- 15

e) Help deliver a high quality annual St. Mark’s Foundation Dinner.

g). Deliver twotimely postal appeals and one newsletter per annum.

h) Work with the Executive Director and Fundraising Administrator to deliver marketing materials to promote St. Mark’s and maintain the website.

i). Recruit new groups and individuals to fundraise for St. Mark’s and provide an appropriate level of support for them.

j). Ensure that proper records are kept and maintained and that correspondence such as thank you letters and progress reports are produced in a timely fashion.

k) Meet with and report regularly to the Executive Director.

l). Manage and Recruit Volunteers

m) To carry out any additional duties that the Executive Director deems appropriate.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

1)Possess a minimum of one year or preferably two yearsexperience in Fundraising.

2)Enjoy working with people as well as being self motivated.

3)Have strong written and verbal communications skills.

4)Have strong computer skills especially familiarity with at least one contact management database.

5)Be able to produce budgetary reports and manage a budget.

6)Be creative.

7)Be able to pay attention to detail and factual correctness.

8)Be able to contribute to team meetings
