QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW
The Certa Level 1 Certificate in Employability is a nationally recognised qualification. It prepareslearnersfor the world of work by developing employability skills that can help if they have found it hard to get a job.
What does this qualification cover?
The Level 1 Certificate has 15 credits, so learners will need to study for up to 150 hours.
Four credits must be from the three mandatory units in Group A. These units help learners develop key employability skills:
  • Communication Skills in Preparing for Work

  • Oral Presentation Skills

  • Working as a Team

The other 11 credits must come from the Optional Group. These units enable learners to develop further employability skills according to their individual needs, and include:
  • Customer Care

  • Dealing with Problems in Daily Life

  • Time Management

  • Improving Own Confidence

  • Responsible Work Practice

  • Interview Skills

  • Developing Own Interpersonal Skills

  • Undertaking and Enterprise Project

What specific knowledge, skills and competences will the learner develop?
Learners will develop knowledge and understanding of the skills and behaviours that are important at work, such as punctuality and looking smart.They will develop a good range of skills that will help them overcome barriers to work by making them more employable, together with some job-search skills.
Who is this qualification for?
The Level 1 Certificate is for learners who need to build up their personal employability skills in order to overcome barriers to work. It may be good for learners who:
  • want to develop a wide range of employability skills on a fairlylong course
  • are ready to study at Level 1 (GCSE Grades D to G)
  • have time to build the skills and confidence they need to apply for work
  • want to study another qualification alongside this one
  • want their learning to be recognised as a formal qualification
  • want a qualification that will help them as part of a Traineeship
  • may be returning to employment after some time away.
Are there any age restrictions?
The Certa Level 1 Certificate is for learners aged 16 years and over.
Do learners need any prior qualifications, attainment or experience?
There are no formal entry requirements.
How are learners assessed?
Tutors assess the Level 1 Certificatevia a variety of tasks that learners build into a portfolio of work as their learning progresses. There are no formal examinations.
All assessments will be in English (or British Sign Language by arrangement with Certa).
Are there different versions of this qualification? If so, why should learners choose this one?
Learners should choose this Level 1 Certificate in Employability if they want to develop personal employability skills on a fairly long course (150 learning hours) and are ready for study at Level 1 (GCSE grades D to G).
Learners who need a short qualification should consider the Level 1 Award (70 hours of learning), which may suit those who want to ‘top-up’ their employability skills quite quickly.
The Certa qualifications in Employability are shown in the table below. This Level 1 Certificate is shaded to show where it fits in the progression ladder.
For those who are capable of study at a higher level, there are qualifications at Level 2 (GCSE grades A* to C).

WHAT COULD THIS QUALIFICATION LEAD TO?
The Certa Level 1 Certificate in Employabilityhelps learners to develop skills they will need to overcome barriers to work.
Will the qualification lead to employment? If so, in which sector or job role, at what level?
This qualification is not available in an apprenticeship, and does not lead directly to employment. It is for learners who need to developa range of personal employability skills, and some job-search skills. This may increase their chances of gaining employment in the future. It may help some learners progress into a work placement, voluntary work or employment, egin a garage, a shop, a salon, an office, a garden centre, or a leisure centre.
Will the qualification support progression to further learning?
The Level 1 Certificateis specifically designed to help people into work. However, it will also will enable learners to progress to further learning at Level 2, eg, the Certa Level 2 Certificate in Employability.
