Guidelines for Preparing Funding Applications

The Committee on College Lectures meets twice during the academic year to fund lectures to bring outside speakers to Rhode Island College. We meet in the late Fall to review and fund proposals for the subsequent Spring semester. We meet in the late Spring to review and fund proposals for the subsequent Fall semester.

*Special Note: Beginning Fall 2010 the CCL will no longer be able to fund memorial lectures or lectures that are named in someone’s honor. These types of lectures are expected to operate with an endowment.

All programs funded by the College Lectures Committee must be held on the RIC Campus, be open to the public and admission-free. Programs should be well-publicized in advance (for example, through flyers and postings in the RIC weekly reports on email,The Anchor,What’s News at RIC, and on the RIC online calendar).

We can fund only honoraria, travel expenses and hotel lodging. The committee typically prioritizes requests in that order. We do not fund meals, receptions, printing costs, rental costs, or capital expenses (e.g., purchase of equipment). In drawing up a budget, please keep in mind that the committee customarily allocates the following sums:

As Honoraria:

$100 to $300 for a campus-wide, school, or department(s) event

$50 to $100 for a classroom presentation

As Travel Allowances:

(a)For speakers flying to Green airport: lowest quoted airfare. Applications must include Orbitz, Travelocity, or similar projected fare quotes for the proposed dates of travel

(b)For speakers residing in North/Atlantic and New England states:

up to $200 for rail/bus or car mileage. Applications must include rail/bus fare quotes or Yahoo itinerary and mileage.

As Lodging:

(a)For lodging, applicants are asked to contact the College’s Accounting office for the latest information on RIC rates at local hotels.
