Course Description: Advanced Contextual Math will explore a wide variety of mathematical concepts included in the Ohio Academic Content Standards for Mathematics. The three-fold purpose of the course is to prepare students for postsecondary education through in-depth examination of mathematical concepts, to prepare students for a successful transition to employment through contextual exercises and projects that foster critical thinking, and to prepare students for ACT mathematical testing through examination, discussion, strategizing, and problem solving of ACT-type questions.

Instructional Philosophy: Mathematics is a universal language that employs logical reasoning. Mathematics is used throughout all aspects of study, living and working. Therefore, mathematics is a necessary tool for success and survival in today’s technological society.

Mathematics must go beyond using basic facts and measurement. All students can achieve high standards and all students should be offered the opportunity to learn to the highest level of mathematics that each student can attain.

Instruction provided will use realistic venues to facilitate student mastery of concepts and skills. This mastery will enable our students to transfer this mathematics learning to new learning, working, and living situations.

Our students will be empowered by the acquisition of mathematics skills. The mathematics skills and understanding learned will be applicable for our students now and throughout their lifelong learning experience and in every problem-solving circumstance they encounter.

Course Outline:

Unit 1: Direct and Inverse Variation

Unit 2: Linear Functions

Unit 3: Systems of Equations

Unit 7: Mathematics and Finance

Unit 8: Trigonometry and Sinusoidal Functions

Final Project

Course Assessment Plan:

Each Nine Weeks

To calculate your grade:

Add together the number of points you earned on assessments, notebook, classwork, projects, and presentations, divide by the total number of points possible, then multiply by 100.

Grading Scale:

A 91 – 100% of total points possible

B 81 - 90% of total points possible

C 71 – 80% of total points possible

D 61 – 70% of total points possible

F less than 61% of total points possible

Attendance, homework, class participation, and other non-graded work will be reported to parents at parent teacher conferences or via phone conference if a problem develops.

Please note this is a tentative schedule. I reserve the right to revise this syllabus/course outline as necessary.

Students will need a three-ring BINDER and loose-leaf paper for this class.

Discipline Policy

Students are expected to behave in a respectful manner that permits learning to occur and allows for intellectual class discussions. The student code of conduct for CCCTC will be followed in class as well. Consequences may include lunch detention, after-school detention, Saturday school, suspension, or expulsion as determined by the principal.

Classroom Rules

Cell phones are not to be used during class time. If a student’s cell phone rings during a graded assignment or the student is using their cell phone to text, view a text, call, answer a call, or use any other function on the phone, he or she will receive a zero on the assignment. (I provide a calculator for each and every student).

1. Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings.

2. If you are tardy to class, you must present a signed pass from a teacher or principal upon your arrival.

3. There is to be nothing on your desktop except what we are currently working on. All other items will be placed under your chair.

4. If you have something to add to the discussion or you want to answer a question, raise your hand and wait for permission to speak.

5. At the end of class, stay in your assigned seat until the bell rings AND I dismiss you.

Restroom Policy

Restrooms are to be used before school begins, during lunch, and after dismissal. Emergencies will be dealt with on a case by case basis.
