Maintenance of Asphalt Pavement – Cost Comparison Worksheet,This document (developed by the Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association) includes a Worksheet that can be used to develop a comparative analysis of strategies and options. The worksheet can be used to develop a Cost/Service Life/Sq.Yd. The primary variable will be the input value for years of service for each strategy.

Thin Asphalt Overlays for Pavement Preservation, NAPA Publication IS 135

Owner agencies are seeking more alternatives to major rehabilitation in order to deal with the preservation of their individual systems. A time-proven method of extending the life of pavement structures that are still in serviceable shape is the application of thin asphalt overlays. These overlays are 1.5 inches or less in thickness, and comprised of aggregate having a small nominal maximum aggregate size, generally 12.5 mm or less.

Regular Upkeep Can Extend Life of Asphalt Pavement

by Damon Thomas and Mike Skinner of CTLThompson, April, 2005

In today’s business market, property owners and managers constantly seek ways to maintain and upgrade their facilities while dealing with static or shrinking budgets. Often, they ponder technological upgrades, general building repairs, landscaping and other aesthetic treatments, such as painting or recarpeting There is another aspect to consider, especially when thinking of long-term cost savings and the first-blush appearance of your property when a visitor or tenant drives up.

When maintenance priorities are developed for properties, upkeep of the asphalt pavements are often at the bottom of the list. In any instances, pavement maintenance is usually delayed to the point where it’s no longer serviceable and in need of econstruction, resulting in a much higher expense than would than would have been needed with proper care.

THE USE OF HOT MIX ASPHALT FOR PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE
The Minnesota Asphalt Pavement Association (MAPA) has been very proactive in explaining the uses and benefits of hot mix asphalt for roadway maintenance. Here are a couple of links to the MAPA website and information on the use of hot mix asphalt in comparison to other strategies for pavement maintenance. In addition, Richard Wolters, MAPA, Executive Director, gave a presentation at the 31st AnnualRockyMountain Asphalt Conference & Equipment Show entitled Thin Overlays as a Cost Effective Preventive Maintenance Tool.
