CMLACMU

Collegiate Middle Level Association at CMU

Active Membership

Attend 75% of the professional meetings and pay dues ($20 for the year or $15 a semester). If you have to miss a meeting for an emergency, you can watch the video of the meeting, but only allowed once during a semester. Earns you a certificate at the end of the year as well as the right to put membership in CMLACMU on your resume for professional affiliations. Dues are used to defray costs of students going to conferences as well as meet miscellaneous expenses and provide other professional opportunities for the members.

Conferences

All members are eligible to attend either the state (MAMSE) conference in the spring and/or the national (NMSA) conference in the fall. Attendees receive financial support from CMLACMU as well as support in securing transportation, housing, and registration.

Volunteering

Each semester there are a number of opportunities available for members to volunteer their time to support the organization, in areas such as fundraising activities, in activities planned with young adolescents, both on and off campus, and in producing our graduate letter. We believe that each of us has a professional responsibility to participate in these activities as we are able; even a half hour can be a great help on some of our major projects. Therefore, we encourage you to continue developing your professional attitudes and behaviors by pitching in to help CMLACMU accomplish its goals. Lots of hands make the work light!

Fundraising

All members are asked to help as able with fundraising to help support the goals of the organization. We sell t-shirts/sweatshirts throughout the year, hold a book fair in both the fall and spring semesters, and generally engage in one other major fundraiser each semester. Again, lots of hands make the work light!

Benefits of Membership

Graduate Letter - CMLACMU puts together a “Graduate Letter” of CMLACMU senior members which is sent to every middle school and junior high administrator in Michigan. By putting your name out as an active member (at least two semesters in which you physically attend the meetings) of CMLACMU, this would definitely help you in your job search.

Year’s Membership in NMSA – If you have been an active member for at least two semesters (in which you physically attend the meetings), upon graduation your name will be sent to NMSA which will award you a free full year’s membership.

MOYA (Month of the Young Adolescent)

Each year we participate in celebrating young adolescents during the month of October. We’ve done a variety of activities - sponsor assemblies in a school, put posters in businesses throughout Mt.Pleasant, secure raffle prizes for middle schoolers, decorate Ronan with posters, etc. - but each year the new committee decides what will be done. A good way to support and/or spend time with young adolescents!

Announcements

In order to minimize the time we spend on “business” and to maximize the time we have to listen to and learn from our speakers, we put up a transparency of all announcements that need to be made that meeting. Please make it a habit to look at it and record any information that you need for yourself.
