Dear College of Education Student Advisor,

This letter is to confirm that we are inviting ______to intern with us this Spring Semester 2014 at ______(name of organization/agency here).

The internship will begin January ____, 2014 and end May ___, 2014. I understand that the student is majoring in the College of Education’s Literacy, Learning, and Leadership degree program.

  • The intern has explained that the internship is optional for their program and that they are seeking this internship for credit and has confirmed that they will be interning for a total of ______hours to fulfill their ___ unit credit requirement. (3 units = 135 hours; 6 units =270 hours)
  • We will supervise the intern during their time with us and understand that there will also be a faculty member at the College of Education that will require some assignments from the intern.
  • We understand that we will be asked to fill out up to 2 evaluations on the intern’s performance while they are with us for the semester.

Intern Description of Tasks and Activities

NAME OF ORGANIZATION: Achieve Builds Confidence, Inc.

1-Please provide a 1-2 line description of the project(s) the intern will be supporting.

The Intern will work as a Job Coach. A job coach is someone who works with and teaches the supported employee to perform job tasks to the employer’s specifications and to learn interpersonal skills to be accepted as a worker at the job site and in the community.

2- Please list tasks/duties/responsibilities you will expect the intern to perform.

Responsibilities of a Job Coach
- Create opportunities for Group Supported Employment activities
- Utilizing a monthly calendar in conjunction with Site Supervisor to create a separate GSE Calendar which anticipates the weekly activities of the site
- Weekly and daily themes
- Working with Site Supervisor to engineer the site to accommodate for GSE activities
- Analyzing and creating objectives tailored to the specific participant yet broad enough to account for appropriate workplace demeanor
- Completing a Vocational Interest Inventory and Résumé for each participant
- Identifying a Job that is within the parameters of interest for each participant
- Making sure daily paperwork is done
Duties of a Job Coach
- Model appropriate work behavior including social skills, communication skills and enthusiasm for work
- Advocate for participants with employers, co-workers to insure satisfying and successful work
- Encourage and motivate the participants to be independent and productive
- Blend into the work environment following all grooming and dress requirements
- Document/write narratives of the day’s work including behavior, production, and the type of work
performed, progress, barriers and the plan of action to solve these barriers
- Coach participants in arriving on time, proper personal hygiene, proper attire, etc
- Teach, assist and support participants in their jobs through demonstration of work/tasks

3- What role do you see the intern having at your organization?

The role of the job coach is to support and encourage appropriate work behaviors and habits. It is the duty of the job coach to encourage and maintain a positive work environment so the supported employee does not become lax in their ways. The role of the coach is teaching through example. Job coaches are to model appropriate work behavior and engage in the same work that the supported employees are doing; focusing on content influence over process influence.
