GPA Requirements
- Must maintain a minimum of 2.0 or higher grade in all education, major and minor courses
- Some majors/minors require higher individual grades (Social Studies, Health/Fitness) so check with your major/minor departments
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher is required per education, major and minor courses

Elementary and Secondary Education
An elementary certificate allows you to teach the broad range of subjects K-8
NOTE: there is now a P-3 only, Early Childhood Major available for persons who do not want to teach specific subjects grades 5-12
Secondary certification allows you to teach specific subjects grades 5-12
Middle school is where specialization begins, so you have to be endorsed in specific subjects to teach at this level. The issue is one of being highly qualified.

Want to be a Middle School Teacher?
- If you only want to be a middle school teacher, at present there are only two subjects available at EWU that provide coursework specifically for this level: the Mathematics and Natural Science majors.
- If you choose these majors, you must also complete the elementary certification courses as well, since middle school math and natural science are tied to the elementary endorsement.
- Your field experience and student teaching will have to be completed grades K-6.
- Your middle school math and natural science departments will provide field experience at the middle school level through practicums.
- Remember, you can pursue secondary certification, which will allow you to teach specific subjects grades 5-12.

Field Experience Information
By participating in the Education program, I agree that I understand:
- Placements are within a 60 mile radius
- Teaching candidate will provide their own transportation to the placement site
- Preferences cannot be guaranteed
- Placement assignments cannot be turned down. If placement is turned down, your program may be delayed a minimum of one quarter. This includes not enrolling in your course sequence for that quarter.
- Dispositions are verified
- A placement quarter is required
- Student will notify the department to update their Program Plan if changes occur

Placement Process
- Placement Office starts theplacement process the quarter following EDUC 200. This is known as the placement quarter.
- Placement assignments are based on the Student’s program and Mentor Teacher needs
- Students will receive an email in their Eagle’s account notifying them when a possible placement has been found.
- Upon receipt of email notification students must come to the Placement Office within 72 hours to pick up their placement letter (this must be done in person). If this does not happen within the 72-hour period the placement may be reassigned.
- Once the placement letter is obtained the student has two weeks in which to arrange for an interview and return the signed placement letter to the Placement Office.

Each quarter students will ask the teacher for permission to continue and will schedule mutually agreeable hours to be in the classroom. All continuing placements are contingent upon the teacher candidate being successful in the school setting.
EDUC 413 Reading in the content area: 3+ hours weekly in school / four or more lessons / EWU supervisor observationEDUC 341 Secondary Strategies Management Assessment: 9+ hours weekly in school / 8 lessons / EWU supervisor observation. (Teacher will receive 10 clock hours)
EDUC 420 Professional Assessment: 3+ hours weekly in school / 4 or more lessons / EWU Supervisor visit
EDUC 426 Student Teaching: Fulltime with 5 or more EWU supervisor observations. (Teacher will receive 10 clock hours and $125.00 stipend )
