Textbook: Introductory & Intermediate Algebra, 3rd/4th Edition by Robert Blitzer, Prentice Hall, 2009/2013.

Requirements: Textbook, scientific/graphing calculator, graph paper, ruler, and pencils (no pens).

Course Outline:

College Algebra II is the secondpart of a two term course sequence which serves as a prerequisite for Applied Calculus (Math 0136). College Algebra II also serves as a mathematics general education requirement. Note that if students are placed in College Algebra I, both College Algebra I and II must be completed with a grade of C- or better in order to satisfy the mathematics general education requirement. Each portion of the two-term sequence is 3 credit hours.

The aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of linear, radical, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions and their graphs. Students will also study rational expressions, rational exponents, linear and compound inequalities, solving systems of linear equations, and solving quadratic equations.

Prerequisite: Math 0097 (College Algebra I) with a grade of C- or better.

Grading:

The student’s grade will be determined by Tests, Quizzes, Homework, and Bellringers. They will be weighted by the following:

Tests -- 60 %

Quizzes –30%

Homework/Bellringers – 10%

Assessments: Each chapter will include a minimum of two quizzes and one test. There will be cumulative final given during finals week. It will be the final that the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford gives there students.

Make-up assessments due to absence: Students may either complete the quiz or test in advance or on the students next present day of class. Please note, if a student misses a review day it is still his/her responsibility to be prepared to take the assessment on the scheduled day of the examination.

Homework: Homework will be graded. Every homework assignment will be worth two (2) points. Students receive 2 points for having all problems completed and all work shown (where applicable), one (1) point for partial work, and zero (0) points will be given for incomplete homework.

Bellringers:Bellringers will be given throughout each chapter, they will be graded periodically and will be included in part of the homework grade (10%). It is expected that students are prepared on all previous taught material that the Bellringers will cover.

Make-up Homework/Bellringers due to absence: Students have up to ten days to

complete any homework/bellringer missed when not present for class, or until the chapter test, whichever comes first. Any assignments not completed within the ten days deadline will earn a zero grade. (For an extended absence please see me if you need an extension.)

Your final grade for the high school will be determined by the following:

Marking period 122.5 %

Marking period 222.5 %

Marking period 322.5 %

Marking period 422.5 %

Final 10%

Your Pitt grade will be your four marking period grades (80%) and your final exam (20%). This may be different than your high school grade.

A+ = 98-100A = 92-97A- = 90-91

B+ = 88-89B = 82-87B- = 80-81

C+ = 78-79C = 72-77C- = 70-71

D+ = 68-69D = 62-67D- = 60-61 F = Below 60

Marking Period 1: Linear Equations and Systems of Linear Equations

Marking Period 2: Factoring and Rational Expressions and Functions

Marking Period 3: Inequalities and Radicals

Marking Period 4: Quadratics and Exponential and Logs
