(POST PRIMARY AND FURTHER EDUCATION)

Job Title: Teacher of Hairdressing

Directly responsible to: Principal/Coordinator or Deputed Officer

Hours of Work: As per contract of employment

Professional Relationships:

The teacher will work in liaison, contact and co-operation with:

Ø  The CEO, Education Officer and deputed officers of Cork ETB

Ø  The Principal/Coordinator and management team

Ø  Members of the School/College/Centre Community

Ø  Organisations, networks and support services relevant to the teacher’s specialism/subject and educational needs of students

Ø  Inspectorate of the Department of Education and Skills (DES)

Ø  Parents and the local community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Conditions of Service of a Teacher are as determined by the regulations of the Department of Education and Skills.

Key Responsibilities are as follows:

Teaching and Learning:

Deliver effective instruction to classes, groups and individual students as assigned by the Principal/Coordinator and in accordance with curriculum requirements, to meet the needs of the students.

This includes:

(i)  Classroom Management and Learning Environment:

a.  Create and maintain a stimulating classroom environment

b.  Create a culture of high expectation for all

c.  Foster and maintain good order and discipline among students

d.  Implement the School/College/Centre Code of Behaviour

(ii)  Planning:

a.  Develop instructional practice and prepare lessons in line with curriculum and appropriate to the needs, interests and experience of students,

b.  Participate in and contribute to educational planning and development within the School/College/Centre Community, including subject and curricular planning

(iii)  Assessment:

a.  Assess student work, development and progression in accordance with local and national policy and the requirements of awarding bodies e.g. DES and QQI

(iv)  Maintenance of Records

a.  Maintain records in relation to student attendance, achievement, progress and behaviour and make available to authorised parties as required in the educational interests of students

b.  Maintain records of School/College/Centre planning, curricular and subject planning as per local policy and DES/QQI guidelines

(v)  Reflective Practice and Professional Development:

a.  Engage in reflective practice in relation to his/her role and responsibilities

b.  Proactively participate in professional development to extend knowledge and skills

(vi)  Professional Practice:

a.  Contribute in a constructive and committed manner to the life of the School/College/Centre

b.  Ensure the proper care of any property or equipment of the Board or School/College/Centre for which he/she may be responsible

c.  Behave in a manner which upholds the culture and values of the School/College/Centre and Cork ETB

(vii)  Communication:

a.  Engage and communicate in a professional and appropriate manner with all stakeholders

b.  Treat all stakeholders with dignity and respect at all times

Other duties and responsibilities as may be lawfully assigned from time to time.

The teacher will work within the framework of national legislation, procedures and Codes of Practice, in addition to Cork ETB policies and procedures. Qualifications and Eligibility:

Qualifications:

·  Candidates must meet the general and special requirements as set out from time to time by the Teaching Council of Ireland for the advertised subject(s). Further details and a full list of recognized qualifications are available on www.teachingcouncil.ie

·  Candidates who are in their final year of degree/postgraduate diploma which will lead to a teaching qualification, but who have not yet completed their final exams and/or received their results, may apply for advertised posts, subject to the provisions regarding Teaching Council registration set out below. Any offer of interview or employment is made pending the candidate’s results meeting the requirements of the post.

A full apprenticeship or training period of 4 years duration with the full Department of Education and Skills Senior Trade Certificate in Hairdressing

And

Not less than three years approved post-apprenticeship experience in hairdressing to include a minimum of two years industrial experience in hairdressing.

Registration with the Teaching Council of Ireland (Essential):

·  Candidates must be currently registered with the Teaching Council of Ireland

·  Candidates shall provide a current Registration Certificate, or confirmation of Registration.

·  Applicants who are newly qualified and (i) whose qualifications are included on the Teaching Council’s list of recognized qualifications and (ii) can provide proof of application to the Teaching Council for registration will be considered for shortlisting for advertised posts.

·  Only written or email confirmation from Teaching Council of receipt of a candidate’s application for registration will be accepted as proof of application. The letter confirming Garda Vetting issued by the Teaching Council is not sufficient proof of application.

Garda Vetting:

·  Candidates are advised to make application to the Teaching Council at least 3 months in advance of seeking employment in order to ensure that their Garda Vetting can be arranged in a timely manner.

·  No teacher may take up a post without satisfactory Garda Vetting clearance. If a candidate has not achieved Garda Vetting clearance by the time his/her post is due to commence, the offer of employment will be withdrawn.

·  Any person being appointed to a teaching position of any duration must also provide a child protection related Statutory Declaration and an associated Undertaking, unless one was provided in the previous calendar year.

Permission to Work in Ireland

·  All candidates must be eligible to work in Ireland. Non EEA nationals (unless exempted) must be in possession of a valid work permit, and must provide original documentation of same.
