Part 1: Warm Up “Amazing Memory Game” As a whole class (in two teams), learners will play the “Amazing Memory Game” which is a memory game using the body part flashcards. Word cards quickly flash on the screen, and the learners must repeat the words in order. Each round, the software adds another card. Do not let learners take notes, but encourage them to use team strategies to remember more words. Typically, teams can remember a string of 9 or so words before making a mistake. Depending on their level this warm up game can be played with just the picture cards (easier), or just the word cards (more difficult) or a random mix of pictures and words (medium difficulty).
Part 2: Writing Practice “Coded Words” Learners complete the Coded Words writing practice worksheet (see Appendix A). They should match the pictograms for each line with the “de-coder” at the top of the page.
Part 3: Writing Practice “Jumbled Words” Learners complete the “Jumbled Words” (see Appendix B). They can use their answers from Part 2 “Coded Words” as hints in order to solve the puzzles.
Part 4: Listening and Writing Practice Learners will listen to the “From Head to Toe” (fast version) song In the song, 12 body parts are listed. Learners will listen and in their notebooks write down the body parts in the order that they appear in the song. Then they will meet in pairs and correct each other’s work. In the song, the words are listed from the top of the body (Head) to the bottom (Toe), so the correct answer will be 12 body part words from “Head” to “Toe”. Once all students have the correct answers spelled correctly and in the correct order, they will write L1 translations next to them and then tape them to the upper corner of their desk (or keep in a folder) as a quick reference cheat sheet for future tasks in this lesson sequence.
Part 5: Getting Started With Learner Chosen Monsters Learners will take out one of their monster images that were assigned as homework in Period 1. The class will listen to “From Head to Toe” (fast version) and learners will point to the relevant body parts on their monster image.
