LABS

You must complete a series of laboratory assignments in the Lab book for each chapter. These assignments require that you listen to taped exercises and then answer questions about them in your workbook. Listening comprehension is a very important element of the entire course, and indeed of learning any language. The more you listen, the better your comprehension and speaking ability. The CD's are available at Brookdale’s College Store. They are also on reserve in the BCC Library in the Multimedia section on the first floor. Alternatively, the audio program can be downloaded from the Web at www.mhhe.com/prego6. Your computer will need a media player, e.g. Windows Media Player.

Ask for the CDs in the Library as "Ital 203 – PCCF"

VIDEO TO ACCOMPANY PREGO -- Please note that in order to view the Videoteca segments on the Web you must use a computer with a cable modem or DSL in order to run the Real Player 8 application.

To view the Videoteca segments in the BCC Library, go to the Media Distribution Desk on the first floor and ask for the Prego Video Program.

Grading Standard:

EVALUATION

In this class, testing serves two purposes: to help determine grades and to evaluate the progress of students. The oral and written tests evaluate your ability to understand and communicate messages in Italian.

There are four traditionally identified communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You will be tested on these skills as well as on vocabulary and structure (grammar) which are basic tools for the acquisition of linguistic competency.

TESTING WILL BE DONE AS FOLLOWS:

·  Test on Capitolo 10 (listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing) 50 points

·  Oral Quiz on Capitolo 10 25 points

·  Test on Capitolo 11 (listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing) 50 points

·  Test on Capitolo 12 (listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing) 50 points

·  Oral Quiz on Capitolo 12 25 points

·  Test on Capitolo 13 (listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing) 50 points

·  Test on Capitolo 14 (listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing) 50 points

·  Oral Quiz on Capitolo 14 25 points

Total test points ……………… 325 points

ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY ------> 30 points

Attendance at Each class is worth 1 point.

Being late twice counts as one absence.

CLASS PARTICIPATION ------> 40 points

--based on willingness to participate in group and individual interactions in class.

LAB ASSIGNMENTS & HOMEWORK ------> 30 points

-- must be completed on time to receive full credit

FINAL GRADE TOTAL ………………………………………… 425 points

In this course you may achieve: A = 90% - 100% = 382 to 425 points

B+ = 85% - 89% = 361 to 381 points

B = 80% - 84% = 340 to 360 points

C+ = 75% - 79% = 318 to 339 points

C = 70% - 74% = 297 to 317 points

D = 65% - 69% = 276 to 296 points

F = Less than 65% = 275 points or lower

GRADING STANDARD:

-- All written tests and quizzes are to be taken at the Testing Center in the NAS building. The Oral section of each test will be done in an interview with the instructor. Tests and quizzes must be taken within one week of the date listed on the semester plan. Failure to do so will result in the loss of 5 points for every week a test is not completed. (2 points for a quiz)

Department Policies:

RE-TESTING

If you do not pass an oral or written test the first time you take it, you may re-take it one more time. The procedure for re-taking is as follows:

1. Work with a tutor on the test you failed.

2. Obtain a re-test permission slip from your instructor.

3. Go to the testing center, present the slip, and make sure you are given the re-test

version of the test.

PLEASE NOTE that re-testing is principally designed to help those who fail a test. The maximum grade that can be achieved on a re-test is 79%. If a student with a grade lower than 79% on the first version of a test would like to raise the grade to a maximum of 79%, the teacher can authorize a re-test.

FINAL GRADE

Your final grade will be based on the number of points you have received on the above criteria. However, you must have accumulated 297 points on the tests and quizzes (equivalent to 70%) before any homework, attendance, or participation points are added to your grade.

Any student who averages 65%-69% on tests and quizzes will receive a “D” grade for the course. Homework, attendance and participation points will not raise the “D” grade.

IF YOUR FINAL GRADE IN THE COURSE IS A “D” YOU WILL PASS THE COURSE BUT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE TO A HIGHER LEVEL IN THIS LANGUAGE.

During the last 2 weeks of the semester, (or one week in Summer semesters,) testing on Chapters 14 and 15 ONLY will be allowed. All other tests, oral and written, MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THIS DATE.

If you have NOT completed the course requirements by the end of the semester, but have successfully completed at least through chapter seven, may apply for an “Incomplete.” Your instructor will explain this procedure during the last 2 weeks of the semester.
