Mission

  • Catalog Description
  • This Occupational Skills Award is designed to prepare students for gaining employment in the fields of teaching, coaching, allied health, and fitness professions. The students will gain a variety of experiences, skills and knowledge that will cover a multitude of sports and associated fields. A minimum grade of “C” in all courses is required to receive this award.
  • Number of Units for the Coaching Award (16.5 Units)

Need

  • Saddleback College has many students who seek jobs in coaching at various settings
  • OSA more attainable for immediate employment rather than a more lengthy certificate
  • Fundamentals of Coaching course has been successful since 1980 with many students
  • Annual students completing the coaching course is at least 45+ and Coaching OSA about 20
  • A current search 11/4/2016 using INDEED.COM for coaching job opportunities (no degree required) within a 50 mile radius of the campus revealed 174 entry level and 60 mid-level listings for athletic coaches.
  • LMI data for coaches and related occupations on Orange County indicated:
  • The number of jobs in 2016 was 47% above national average
  • Median salary $17.06
  • Job growth is expected to grow by 8.6% between 2016-2025
  • There were 1,338 unique job postings between April 2011- May 2016
  • There were 845 completions in 2014 versus 225 job openings in 2014 in occupational programs (note, these are not kinesiology programs so other sources should be used to verify need)
