Frequently asked questions. (FAQS)
What is coaching?
Coaching is ‘the process of equipping people with the tools, knowledge and opportunities they need to develop themselves and become more effective.’
(D.B Peterson, Executive coaching at work: the art of one-to-one change’ Consulting Psychology Journal, 1996)
It has also been defined as ‘the art of facilitating the performance, learning and development of another’.
(Downey, M. (1999) Effective coaching. London: Orion Business Books.
In essence it is about me assisting you to identify and achieve what you want in your life. It focuses on the present and future and requires you (the client) to set objectives and action plans so that you can move forward and achieve your goals.
In order to do this I will:
· encourage you to set and achieve goals
· assist with keeping you focused
· support you in moving forward
· provide you with tools and training to attain what you want
How will the coaching be arranged?
The coaching will be arranged by us finding a date and time that suits you and I will phone you/meet you at this agreed time. The coaching is provided by phone and/or face to face appointments if you live locally to our office area. If the coaching is phone based then you need to ensure that your environment is suitable and free of distractions. The sessions will focus on establishing what things are important to you in both your professional and personal life and I will work with you so that you can identify what holds you back achieving your goals. You will learn how to recognise and reduce/remove these obstacles so that you can be successful and achieve your ambitions.
As your coach I will assist you in this process by listening, asking you questions, working with you to identify actions and supporting you in achieving your goals. I will do this by using some coaching tools and techniques and by providing you with feedback and opportunities for reflecting.
Who needs coaching?
Coaching can be used by all sorts of people, regardless of their professional or personal context. The single most important thing is that the client recognises a desire to change something and that “the coaching process” could be helpful to them in order to assist them in doing this.
What do I (the client) have to bring to the relationship?
A commitment to be coached and attending the appointment. A recognition that in some area of your life a gap exists between where you are and where you want to be and that you will be prepared to learn, develop and be proactive in moving closer to achieving your ideals. This will involve you setting goals, exploring obstacles and evaluating your progress. This process may be challenging but is a normal part of the coaching process which can lead to your personal growth.
How long is the coaching session?
The first session is 90 minutes. 2nd and subsequent sessions are for 45 minutes. The sessions may be booked between the hours of 09.00 and 20.00. I may ask you to complete certain tasks in preparation for the session which you will do in your own time.
