Timber Harvesting Options for

Woodland Owners

Tuesday, October 15, 7pm

OSU Extension Auditorium, 569 Hanley Road, Central Point

Whether a timber harvest is large or small, woodland owners must carefully evaluate their objectives before beginning. A well-conducted harvest will help realize those objectives, but a poor job may lead to disappointing results that endure for a long time. Many landowners have little personal experience with timber harvesting and are unfamiliar with the myriad choices of equipment and methods. The goal of this program is to help owners select the harvesting options most appropriate for their specific timber and property characteristics as well as their unique objectives. Speaker: Blair Moody, Biomass Lead, BLM/USFS. Blair is a field forester in southern Oregon with many years of experience in timber harvesting. Please RSVP to 541-776-7371.

Forestry Field Tour: Diverse Owners, Diverse Management Styles

Saturday, October 19, 9am-1pm

Meet Sugar Pine Café, Butte Falls

Small woodland owner and longtime forestry contractor Don Hamann will lead a tour of forest ownerships in the Butte Falls area, including public lands (BLM and Medford Water Commission), forest industry, and private woodlands. Topics will include thinning for fire hazard reduction and watershed management, combining timber and cattle, timber harvest and reforestation methods, and others. This is a unique opportunity to see how and why different types of owners manage the way they do, and to take a look at the results. Meet at the Sugar Pine café in Butte Falls (follow Butte Falls Hwy into town, café address is 343 Broad St, the main road through town). We will carpool to the field sites within about 15 miles of town. Dress for walking in the woods. You are invited to lunch at the Sugar Pine café after the tour. Pay at the door. Please RSVP to OSU Extension 541-776-7371 and let us know if you want lunch.
