  • First of 4 new courses proposed for development as part of a new suite of Masters for delivery by the Cambridge Theological Federation (CTF)
  • No PSRB accreditation
  • Proposed Home/EU Tuition Fee 2018/9: £7,100 p.a. (P/T £3,500 p.a.) Proposed International Tuition Fee 2018/9: £12,600 (P/T £6,300 p.a.)
  • Anticipated Annual Recruitment: 15 FTE
  • All four courses will be delivered by Blended Learning but an additional Distance Learning route is proposed for the Modern Faith and Belief course only
  • The Faculty has actively worked with the CTF at all levels since 1995 and an ALSS staff member works within the CTF (Research)
  • The proposed course aims to increase both Postgraduate and Research student numbers (the MA connects with the Prof Doc Practical Theology). It also aims to help revitalise curriculum provision within the Dept of Humanities and Social Sciences, and drive up student achievement and satisfaction statistics based on previous performance from MA students and collaborations with the CTF
  • All proposed new MAs aim to appeal to international students by having two course intake points and topics covering significant themes of international relevance.
  • Subject expertise within CTF spans a range of World Christianity including interreligious dialogues among Abrahamic religions
  • All proposal aim to capitalise on and fill a gap in the HE market in interdisciplinary training following the closure of Heythrop College, University of London. Proposals are aligned to several popular MA courses previously delivered by Heythrop College and should be of interest to lay members and clergy of different Churches, as well as professionals working in the subject area and wanting to progress
  • Similar MA provision in individual topics covered within this specific proposal at King’s College London, Durham University and University of Birmingham. However this course distinctively brings topics together
  • 65% modules distinctive to this MA (210 credits). 35% modules to be shared with other MAs in this new suite of course proposals for the CTF (120 credits): 30c core module (Human Condition), 30c (Research Methods), and 60c (Major Project). Total available credits = 330 credits
  • Minimum anticipated impact on resources as delivery, assessment, student support, learning resources will be done through the CTF. No capital expenditure for ARU; business plan done with CTF
  • Standard trimester delivery pattern

PG Dip:
120 Level 7
MA:
180 Level 7 /
  • Second of 4 new courses proposed for development as part of a new suite of Masters for delivery by the Cambridge Theological Federation (CTF)
  • This proposal shares most details as per the proposal above with noted exceptions to structure and content below
  • This course should share the same steady recruitment base as a previous MA Pastoral Theology delivered by the CTF. It should appeal to a wide range of applicants working in different contexts of pastoral care, professionals looking for CPD, and those considering future doctoral work having been out of HE for some time.
  • Course content will provide focus on chaplaincy and pastoral care from a specifically Christian perspective with opportunity to explore specific contexts of chaplaincy through a pastoral supervision module and placement module
  • Potential for future development of a placement module for the course in healthcare chaplaincy that may be registered with the UKBHC for Continuing Professional Development points
  • Intention by the CTF to explore block teaching to allow for short term study visits to supplement synchronous online modules to allow for a more attractive proposition to international students (this delivery pattern works well in other CTF graduate provision)
  • There is much UK provision by HEIs in chaplaincy at Masters Level, although normally focused in specific areas of specialism. This MA is specifically designed for Christian practitioners in a range of different contexts, focussing on chaplaincy from the perspective of Pastoral Theology
  • 55% modules distinctive to this MA (150 credits). 45% modules to be shared with other MAs in this new suite of course proposals for the CTF (120 credits): 30c core module (Human Condition), 30c (Research Methods), and 60c (Major Project). Total available credits = 270

180 Level 7 /
  • Third of 4 new courses proposed for development as part of a new suite of Masters for delivery by the Cambridge Theological Federation (CTF)
  • This proposal shares most details as per the proposal above with noted exceptions to structure and content below
  • This degree is profoundly research-driven, due to the expertise of key teaching staff, allowing for moral engagement with contemporary issues, and exploration of ethics of particular professional areas from theological and philosophical perspectives
  • Topics of global ethics and market economy should help widen appeal of the course to the international student market
  • CTF have seen increased demand for Ethics Masters through enquiries in recent years, especially following closure of Heythrop College, University of London and its now defunct MA in Contemporary Ethics which was highly successful and compared closely to this proposal, leaving a gap in the local market. Teaching staff expertise in the subject area is in place at the CTF
  • High variety of ethics provision within theology faculties, law and medical schools within the UK, e.g. Leeds, Birmingham, Aberdeen. However, other provision differs from this theological and spirituality linked proposal. Location of the CTF also provides opportunity to attract markets in the East of England and London regions
  • 65% modules distinctive to this MA (210 credits). 35% modules to be shared with other MAs in this new suite of course proposals for the CTF (120 credits): 30c core module (Human Condition), 30c (Research Methods), and 60c (Major Project). Total available credits = 330

MA:
180 Level 7 /
  • Fourth of 4 new course proposals as part of a new suite of Masters for delivery by the Cambridge Theological Federation (CTF). This postgraduate course in Spirituality is to be made available as 3 discrete awards
  • This course shares most details as per the proposal above with noted exceptions to structure and content below
  • Proposal aims to meet rising demand and interest in spirituality within UK churches, and secular organisations and industries, especially from the NHS’ and its focus on spiritual care in different contexts. The MA in Christian Spirituality previously offered at Heythrop was very successful, being over-subscribed in some years
  • This course offers a distinctive grounding in ecumenical and global traditions, such as orthodoxy, whilst connecting to key issues of ethics, formation and pastoral care through shared modules with the other MAs being proposed
  • Staff expertise at the CTF will be supplemented by links with the expert research group at the Religious Life Institute, now part of the CTF and based at the Margaret Beaufort institute of Theology. Diversity of working collaborations should therefore be attractive to multiple student bases worldwide
  • Currently no HE programmes within London and the East of England on spirituality. Some similar provision in other geographic areas but with specialised focus on Christian Spirituality (Sarum College), health (University of Durham) and ecology (Trinity St Davids)
  • 55% modules distinctive to this MA (150 credits). 45% modules to be shared with other MAs in this new suite of course proposals for the CTF (120 credits): 30c core module (Human Condition), 30c (Research Methods), and 60c (Major Project). Total available credits = 270

  • First of 5 new planning proposalsfor a suite of degrees relating to Policing, some of which will be accredited by the professional body for Policing, the College of Policing
  • Proposal for a new Degree Apprenticeship in Policing to meet the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship Standard (currently awaiting approval by the Institute for Apprenticeships)
  • To have professional body accreditation from the College of Policing
  • Degrees at Work initiative
  • Proposed Home/EU Tuition Fee: £27,000 whole course. Proposed International Tuition Fee: N/A (due to Apprenticeship funding criteria)
  • Anticipated Annual Recruitment: 350 FTE (regional police forces)
  • Course development is demand led from regional Police Forces to meet future targets that by 2020, 2.3% of the Police workforce in any year will be apprenticeship starters (Kent and Essex plan 40% of new intakes of PCs to be via apprentices)
  • The BA course curriculum has been approved by the professional body for policing, the College of Policing, being aligned to its new Policing Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF). ARU shall be bidding to deliver the course under contract, to be funded via the Apprenticeship Levy
  • This course will build on existing staff expertise within ALSS (existing BSc Policing and Criminal Justice, proposed BA Professional Policing, and within Anglia Law School), the Policing Institute for the Eastern Region (PIER) being developed within the Dept of Humanities and Social Sciences, and within FST (Forensic Science). LDS will support development and delivery of Distance Learning where appropriate
  • Although the PCDA standard has not yet been approved, there is considerable interest in delivery from other HEIs due to anticipated apprenticeship numbers. There is stated preference from local forces for local delivery and partnership, so strongest competition will come from our own region i.e. Suffolk, Kent and Northampton
  • Curriculum requirements yet to be confirmed but expected to be 84% existing modules and 16% new. A provision of core policing modules, aligned to the PEQF, will be shared between this PCDA, the existing BSc Policing and Criminal Justice, and the proposed BA in Professional Policing. Suggested structure only is provided
  • Some supporting resources needed in relation to staffing for module development and delivery. Teaching may be staffed by ALSS and/or specialist tutors contracted via LDS or the employing police force. Small amount of additional online resources for the Library required
  • Standard trimester delivery pattern

  • Second policing proposal for a new undergraduate degree in Professional Policing
  • To have professional body accreditation from College of Policing
  • Proposed Home/EU Tuition Fee: £9,250 p.a. Proposed International Tuition Fee: N/A
  • Anticipated Annual Recruitment: 20 FTE
  • This course is being developed as one of three entry routes to be available for Police Constables from 2020: a pre-join degree in Professional Policing; a Degree Holder Entry Programme conversion course for graduates from any discipline, and a Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) - as per the above proposal
  • As per the PCDA, the BA Professional Policing is aligned with the new Policing Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF), developed by the professional body for policing, the College of Policing
  • Students will generally become Special Constables with a local or regional police force as part of the requirements, becoming qualified PCs on graduation. Arrangements with forces will be approved by the College of Policing and HEIs are currently providing feedback on this
  • Policing is an identified area for growth of strategic importance to ALSS, with local police forces planning to recruit approximately one third of annual PCs from BA Hons Professional Policing graduates. This BA will also enable existing police staff to become educated to degree level
  • Some interest expressed from other HEIs in delivering the new PEQF qualifications but currently no policing provision in Cambridge and the surrounding counties. Competition from University of Bedfordshire, University of Northampton and some London universities, although it is uncertain whether PSRB accreditation and PEQF qualifications are planned
  • Curriculum requirements yet to be confirmed but expected to be 84% existing modules and 16% new. A provision of core policing modules, aligned to the PEQF, will be shared between this proposed BA, the proposed PCDA, and the existing BSc Policing and Criminal Justice. Suggested structure only is provided

  • Third policing proposal for a new undergraduate degree in Criminology and Policing
  • No PSRB accreditation
  • Proposed Home/EU Tuition Fee: £9,250 p.a. Proposed International Tuition Fee: N/A
  • Anticipated Annual Recruitment: 20 FTE
  • Proposal to complement the suite of Policing degrees being developed at Chelmsford to support new requirements for degree entry for all new PCs by 2020. However, it will provide a course specifically for study in Cambridge, which will have a discrete market from Chelmsford (existing BSc Policing and Criminal Justice students have indicated they would be unwilling to travel to Cambridge to study this course)
  • Through a combination of policing with criminology this BA is anticipated to appeal to a wider careers market than those purely wishing to join the Police
  • The course will provide an alternative degree route to replace the Public Service degrees (FdA and BA), which are planned to be discontinued from Sept 2018.
  • Around 30 universities offer some form of policing degree. Closest competition exists from University of Bedfordshire, University of Northampton and some London universities such as EUL, UWL and London Met. Some universities have set up delivery sites for their policing provision in London. However, there is no policing provision in Cambridge and the surrounding counties apart from the above
  • 100% existing modules to be shared with BA Criminology, and BSc Policing and Criminal Justice. Additional option modules could be shared from Sociology, Politics and History
  • No anticipated additional staffing resources. Some additional online resources will be required for the Library e.g. £1000 for books
  • Standard semester delivery pattern
/ APPROVEDwith CONDITIONS:
  • to clarify for the approval event the difference in content between the existing BSc at Chelmsford and this proposed new BA for Cambridge
  • To reflect on the two titles of the existing BSc and proposed BA (potentially confusing)
  • To ensure the Public Service degrees are not discontinued until full approval is granted for this proposed new course

  • Anticipated Annual Recruitment: 10 FTE
  • This course is aimed at both graduates and police officers and staff looking for postgraduate qualifications to enable career progression. It also aims to be an attractive progression route from other new undergraduate courses being proposed in this suite of degrees relating to Policing
  • The Police Studies course will offer a Research Fellowship route as a PG Cert involving a research methods module and a work-based project module
  • Course development in Policing is of strategic importance to ALSS in increasing Postgraduate student numbers and building partnerships, alongside growth and development of the new Policing Institute for the Eastern Region (PIER) within the Dept of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • UK provision of postgraduate courses in police-related studies is generally low but courses and recruitment are increasing. Some provision in related subjects such as terrorism but few exist in police studies and none are offered in this region. Some national provision in MA courses in policing (Canterbury Christ Church, Derby, Liverpool John Moores, and Warwick) with closest competitors being Kent, Essex, Leicester and HEIs in London
  • 33% existing modules (1 x 60 credit and 1 x 30 credit) and 67% proposed new modules – to be confirmed (6 x 30 credit – 4 of which will be shared with the proposed DProf Police Studies). Some modules will be aligned with the PEQF and shared between other planned postgraduate policing qualifications (Masters Apprenticeship in leadership and management for chief officers could share modules with this course)

  • No PSRB accreditation
  • Proposed Home/EU Tuition Fee: £4,120 p.a. Proposed International Tuition Fee: N/A
  • Anticipated Annual Recruitment: 5 FTE
  • This DProf will be targeted at senior police professionals, enabling development of professional practice and career progression, whilst simultaneously helping to develop and professionalise Policing as an academic discipline within the Public Sector. The DProf will also provide a progression route from the postgraduate courses in Police Studies within this suite of proposals
  • Course structure enables critical reflection and research at doctoral level based on existing workplace practice, fitting well with the objective of PIER within the Dept of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • The course shares the same strategic importance for ALSS as other Policing proposals in this suite of new courses
  • Some similar Prof Doc provision at London Met (Policing, Security and Community Safety) and Liverpool John Moores (Policing Security and Criminal Justice) but no current provision of a Prof Doc in Policing in the Eastern Region. This proposal should therefore be attractive to all Eastern Police Region Forces
  • 100% new modules at Level 7 to be shared with the proposed MA Police Studies (4 x 30 credit modules). 420 notional credits at Level 8 to be gained via a 60,000 word project for the Prof Doc qualification
