CMP 113- Mid Term Assignment

You teach Tutorial 6!

For this assignment, you are to prepare a lesson to teach the concepts in Tutorial 6. In this lesson you should plan to teach “key concepts” of the chapter by whatever method you choose. One way to check learning of a concept is by assessment. Create some form of assessment for your “students.” This can be a test, a project, a demonstration… whatever you decide.

You will be graded on the following things:

  • How you handle the “teaching” of the class. Yes, you will teach us!
  • What type of assessment you give.
  • Your demeanor and presentation decorum.

The Tutorial has been segmented into three “key concept” parts. Choose one segment to teach. Pay attention to key words in the segment you choose. Remember, you are teaching us.

Segment 1- Disk Cleanup, Internet Explorer, Disk Check (starting page 366)

  • Demonstrate how to perform a Disk Cleanup. Make sure to explain the parts of the dialog box that opens. You will not perform the Disk Cleanup in class as you do not have administrator rights.
  • Demonstrate how to empty the Internet Explorer Internet Cache.
  • Explain what a Cookie is.
  • Explain why a file system problem might exist. (pg. 372 for help)
  • Demonstrate how to use Check Disk Utility. Show details of the scan.

Segment 2- Flash Drive Error-Checking, Opening Command Line, Disk Defragmentation (starting pg. 385)

  • Demonstrate how to perform an Error Check on a Flash Drive.
  • Demonstrate how to open the Command-Line.
  • Show how to run the Check Disk Utility from the Command Line.
  • Explain the difference between contiguous and noncontiguous file clusters. (pg. 392 for help)
  • Demonstrate how to open the Disk Defragmenter and set schedules for defragmentation.
  • Explain the benefits of defragmentation.

Segment 3- Terminology used in Tutorial 6

  • You will explain the definition of the following words below. The explanation can be in whatever form you choose. Remember, teaching is a combination of knowledge plus entertainment. If you just drone away the definitions to us, we will quickly become bored. Try and be creative if you choose this segment.
  • Cache
  • Temporary Files
  • Recycle Bin
  • Add-On
  • Feed, also known as an RSS Feed
  • Orphaned File
  • Repair Switch
  • Lost Cluster
  • File Fragment
  • Lost Chain
  • Cross-linked File
  • Fix Switch
  • Solid-state Drive
  • Why is it important to optimize your computer?

Some helpful teaching hints:

 Speak clearly

 Have a backup plan in case something goes wrong, ie. Screen shots!

 Utilize tools and resources available to you, like PowerPoint

 Come prepared

 For the assessment, you can choose a test or quiz, but is that the best way to see if your students know the material? Why not have them come up and demonstrate?

 Food seems to be a popular way to get students’ attention, but it doesn’t substitute for poor teaching

 Have fun
