Clyst St George Parish Council Chairman’s Notes: June 2017

Everyone will now have received information from East Devon District Council (EDDC) regarding the new arrangements for their recycling collections. From Monday 12thJuneEDDC are increasing the items that you can recycle weekly through your kerbside collections. The actual date above varies according to your area.

Green Box. In addition to paper, glass, textiles, shoes and batteries, you can add small electrical items, eg irons or kettles; and cardboard, eg egg cartons, cereal boxes and clean cardboard food packaging. (Larger cardboard to be packed to one side of the boxes.)

New Green Re-Usable Sack.In addition to tins, foil and empty aerosols, you can add cartons, Tetrapaks, plastic pots, plastic meat and vegetable trays, plastic bottles and plastic tubs, etc.

Blue Food Caddy. Weekly collection as before.

As so much more is now going to be collected for recycling on a weekly basis our grey bins will be collected every three weeks.

If you have any questions or worries on this alteration please call 01395 571515 or email . I am assured that there is a dedicated team ready to help you. This process has been tried out in the Exmouth area very successfully and the recycling has risen by some 20 per cent to over 60 per cent. I feel sure that we will get used to it in time though it is always a bit difficult to adjust to change.

It has been suggested recently that our Housing Needs Survey should be updated as it was last carried out in 2011. This is correct and we also need an up to date survey for our nearly completed Neighbourhood Plan. To this end we have invited the Rural Housing Enabler who works for Devon Communities Together to come to our next meeting (14th June) to answer any questions that the public may have on this matter. We hope that Ms Alexander will give a short explanation of the process involved and be able to answer your questions. Do come along if you have any questions or worries about this matter.

We have received a few complaints recently regarding dog fouling - please will everyone who owns and exercises dogs in the parish keep them under control and make sure that no fouling is left for the public to encounter? Please clear up after them to keep our parish for everyone’s pleasure. We have dog bins around the parish so if you remember your ‘poo’ bags there should be no problem. Thank you.

Lastly – I am delighted to say that we have had a good response to applications for the casual vacancy in the Parish Council and each applicant will give a short presentation at our June meeting. This will help us decide the most appropriate candidate. As you know the public is always welcome to attend our meetings.

Lady Seawards C of E Primary School

The second half of the spring term was a very busy time. Rockies Class had a visit from the Warburtons Bakery Company. They learned all about how the company make bread in the factories, as well as how they distribute it around the country. Following this, the children also had a go at making bread themselves. They got to take this home, as well as many other Warburtons goodies to share! From this the class wrote some fantastic instructions all about how to make bread. They remembered each step that they had to take and have tried to include all of their writing skills in this piece.

A wonderful Mother’s Dayservice was held at Clyst St George Church withall of the classes along with theLittle Dragons pre- school performing an array of songs, poetry and artwork aimed at showing their appreciation to all the mums present. A full crowd of parents and members of the school community were able to enjoy each performance with a number of heart-warming messages being read out from different children. Each child was also able to say a personal thank you by presenting a bunch of flowers which was a lovely moment for mother and child to share.

Our Easter service was also held in Clyst St George Church which was attended by many parents and members of the wider school community. All classes were involved in this important service which retold the story of Christ’s crucifixion. The children acted out key scenes from the Easter story such as his arrival in the town of Jerusalem, the Last Supper and Jesus’s betrayal at the hands of Judas, Christ’s crucifixion and finally his resurrection. Poignant prayers were offered by the school ethos team along with Palm Crosses being kindly given to each child by the attending Rev’ds Karen Spray and Sid Humphries.

A well done to all pupils who participated in the Lady Seaward’s Easter Bonnet Parade which saw an array of fantastic homemade designs proudly worn by pupils from across all age groups.

Clyst St George has a delightful nature garden by the side of the parish church. The aim of the garden is togrow local Devon indigenous plants and trees and to encourage a Devon meadow with local wild flowers. Should you wish to help develop this ‘green’ facility, you can come along on the first Saturday of every month from 9.30 to 11 am.
