4 CHALLENGES TO ORDER PAPER

5 DATES TO NOTE

5.1 Women in Sport Leadership programme application deadline - 28th January

CP – The first date we have to note is the Women in Sport Leadership Programme application deadline which is tomorrow Wednesday the 28th. It is a great programme that leads on from the conference and offers students a good experience within an NGB.

5.2 Scottish Universities & Colleges Wheelchair Basketball Tournament - 1st February

CP – On Sunday we are also holding the first ever Scottish Universities & Colleges Wheelchair Basketball Tournament down at the Gannochy. We also have a Give It A Go session tomorrow. If you haven’t got involved yet get yourself down.

5.3 NSS (National Student Survey) - 2nd February

CP - The National Student Survey opens on the 2nd February and is for all final year students. They are a few incentives to filling it in such as 2 for 1 MacRobert cinema tickets for anyone who completes the survey and they will also be put into a prize draw for Grad Ball tickets. It would be great if you could all to promote this amongst your networks as The University values the responses of their students.

5.4 Elections - 9th & 10th February

CP – As I am sure you will all be aware the union elections are happening earlier this year. The candidate’s information and manifesto’s are on the Union website, so have a look at that.

Any questions or other dates to note? No, the move on the reports.

6 Elections & Resignations

None

7 REPORTS / PRESENTATIONS

7.1 Sport President

CP – Refreshers by all accounts went well. As we know from previous years it isn’t as busy as Freshers but this year it did seem to be good in terms of uptake; which is good. We have also had new clubs setting up such as; Akido & Self Defence, Curling and Shinty. As far as I am aware Give It A Go week also seems to be going well for new members.

Myself and Scott were also recently at a Healthy Body Healthy Mind event at Glasgow Caley. This year there is a focus on Smoking Prevention. In previous years the award was more about what institutions do best. This might mean we may struggle to get 5 stars, but we will see what happens.

I would also like to remind you that there will be a minutes silence tomorrow in memory of Pete Bilsborough all BUCS games. For those of you who aren’t aware Pete was the head of Sports Development Services and the Academic school. His passing was true sad day for sport at Stirling as he made a massive contribution to sport at the University.

8 DISCUSSION AND DECISION TOPICS

8.1 Sports Ball

CP – This year’s Sport Ball will be on 18th April at the MacDonald Inchyra. It makes more sense to have it in this venue as there was a challenge around travel and cost last year. The one challenge we do have at this venue is its limited capacity. In terms of tickets we want to make it as fair as possible. Therefore we thought we would ask you guys your opinion on what we should do.

Tickets go on sale on the 3rd March for 4th years and committee members and the then the general sale is 10th March. Obviously there is always high demand and people always miss out. We are looking for ideas to make it fairer. Do you think there should be a quota system for each club on how many tickets they get?

RB - I think a quota system would be the fairness way of doing it.

SC – Using a quota system who would decide on who gets the tickets within the clubs?

RB - The committee of each club could decide on who within the clubs get the tickets. In my club I would rare see the dedicated members get tickets over member who are only interested in the social aspect.

JG - I think a quota system is fair but I wouldn’t like to decide on who get tickets as I feel there could be arguments that come from that.

FH - I don’t see a problem with the way it’s been done before therefore I don’t think it should be changed.

SC – It was also suggested that a ballot system may be another fair way to sell the tickets. It is used at events that have a high demand for tickets such as the Commonwealth Games.

CM - A ballot would mean that one random person within a club could get a ticket and have nobody to go with.

SC - That’s a good point and would probably rule that out. Another issue that was highlighted was the queuing aspect of purchasing tickets. People took time out of class to queue up and there was also an issue with queue jumping. Therefore should we do an on-line sale? Can you give us a show of hands that would be in favour of an on-line sale or a queuing type sale?

*** Queuing sale wins

CP – There is no one way of doing things that is fair for everyone. It was good to hear your thoughts we will go away and have a think about things and let you know if we need more input. One thing that is certain is that 4th years and committee members will get priority when it comes to selling the tickets.

8.2 Tribute to Pete Bilsborough

CP – As I previously mentioned there is a minute silence at all games tomorrow for Pete Bilsborough.

8.3 Update on Connor’s Journey

CP – I would like to invite Jack the Rugby president to give us an update on Connor Journey.

JH – Hi, for anyone who wants to know Connor is now in San Diego; Project Walk going through an 8 week rehab programme. He is doing really well and is fully focused on his rehab. The fundraising is continuing and I would like to thank everyone who has got involved it is much appreciated. The new target is £100,000 and we are currently at £75,000. The next fundraising event we have planned is a big dinner in May. It would be great to get clubs involved as we are trying to aim for a good turnout.

We are also having the Rugby v Football competition event again this year, but this year making it fundraiser. It will be held up on the top pitch. If anyone has any questions about the events just give me a shout.

CP – That’s great, thanks Jack. The Rugby v Football was a great event last year so I look forward to seeing that again.

8.4 Ladies Gaelic Dodgeball Tournament

CP – I would like to invite Sarah from Ladies Gaelic Football to present to us on an upcoming event they have.

SH – Hi, we are holding a dodgeball tournament next Thursday the 5th February. We aren’t a big club and have tournament coming up so we want to raise some funds for that as well as donating some of the money to charity. The entry fee is £2 entry per person. If anyone has any questions then just email me. There is also a Facebook event page set up that we can send around.

CP – Thanks Sarah. That brings to an end the meeting. We will be in touch to arrange a President Forum, where we can talk more there.
